so im looking at buying a m70 from a friend at work,(he bought it online and hes not impressed with it so i can but it for the same price he paid) its chambered in .338winmag and he wants 600$ for it, im not sure what its worth, and if that is a good price. also i cant seem to find the year of it, anytime i type the serial number in the online year finders it says "enter numbers only" , so i drop the "G" and it says " not a valid serial number"

basically im looking for some info on the rifle, like year and guessed value from these few pics, also what stock and muzzle brake is on it? and over all what do you think of the rifle and anything you notice about it, he did tell me the safety is very stiff on the rifle. thats about all i know about it. im more of a mill surplus guy myself.

thanks for your thought and opinions

It's a push-feed M70 from 1985. Stock is almost certainly a replacement. Not worth $600 to me, and I would deduct another $50 for the muzzle brake. I would offer $450 for the rifle and tell him to keep the scope. It adds nothing to the value.

More generous then I would be.... I'm surprised anyone would want it in the current configuration.

Some people will pay extra for a brake ( not me I hate the things) but without the scope ( can't tell which Bushnell it is but it looks like a lower quality one) I agree its worth about $450-$500 . There is nothing wrong with the push feed model 70's but they are not well loved and so do not go for high prices.

That gun is sort of a deal. He put a weird aftermarket stock that I think look ridiculous. You are also trusting he did it right, chances are it lost some accuracy. The muzzle brake is again assuming its done right and why a 338 win mag? For 600 you could get nicer looking brand new rifle in a cheaper and still capable round.

I'd say it's worth $400 with or without the scope.

The stock needs a new paint job and the scope needs to go in the garbage.

Other than that, I dont see an issue with the rifle.

Ok, thanks for the input guys. He paid 600 and isnt overly happy with it. He has the option to send it back for a refund if he does it within the week, but also offered it to me for the same 600 since i was asking about it. He got it becaus it was cheap and he won a moose draw this year so he was going to use it for that. The only reason i was thinking about it was to have a .338 lol. I wouldnt mind haveing one to shoot when i got the feeling to fire a cannon off. But ill wait on doing that and tell him he should send it back if he can get his money back.
