Hi Im building a Vietnam M70 clone but its a 308 Target rifle not the 30-06.I ordered a set of Unertyl type blocks for it.It seems the front Barrel block is 1/4" below the rear block that sits on the front receiver ring.Should they be even or should they be like that?Are there different height front blocks?I have left some messages with the guy in the US but he is one of those super patient people and hasnt answered yet.Dave
 
Target scope blocks come in different heights.
The tops of the blocks should be close to paralleling the bore.
If the front block is a bit lower than the rear, that would build some extra elevation into the mount system. But not a 1/4".
 
Thats what Im thinking,Im trying to contact the guy in the US but he is slow in responding.Do you know of anyone that might have blocks in Canada?Dave

I know Brownells sells them, or used to anyways. I got mine through them.

I'd say call Western Gun Parts, but the last time I was in there and mentioned scope mounting, they were quick to tell me that they only deal with Weaver mounts and pieces.
 
Google Garry Feller's vintage sights, give him a calk, if he don't have it, nobody does!
He's in the USA, but ships small stuff to Canada, been a few years since I ladg ordered, so make sure he still selling to Canada?

You could also use a Bushnell 3x9 with post or an Acra Trac Redfield 3x9 and be correct also. These scopes were
used as replacements in the field.

I just picked up a Model 70 Vietnam era sniper build about a month ago, a 1946 model 70 in 30-06 with a Hi-Lux USMC 8x scope.
Planning on re-barreling with the the original "heavy" taper.





Something oddly satisfying to me about match grade 30-06, these are 200gr SMK's with Winchester brass, a staring load of IMR 4350 and cci


Got it zeroed and it would do pretty well for 4 shots, then throw the 5th. Not bad for a 71 year old Sporter weight barrel!


Most groups including the fliers where in the 0.8"-1.1" range at 100 yards. Have a lad test of 200SMK and 200 ELD-X ready to test, just need some warmer weather.

That was plenty accurate enough for 8 inch enemy "circles" in the jungles of 'Nam.
1 MOA is beyond effective for real world shooting. If you aren't chasing ghost measurements using calipers at thousandth's of an inch from a bench lol
Most of those guys were using a range finder redfield scope with a target bracketing system to read approx distance and adjusting their turret just enough to put a 175gr open tip projectile somewhere between the heart/lungs and the bottom of the chin. Which again if you are applying 1 MOA accuracy, is beyond effective out to 800 yards.
Some very impressive shooting from the USMC snipers in that conflict.

I'm actually very surprised how well it shoots, considering. I'm just curious how well I can get it to shoots with its original barrel.

Hathcock wrote a few times that near the end, his Model 70 was pretty shot out and that it was a 1.5 moa rifle at best, but he seemed to know exactly how to use it. Definitely impressive shooting considering what they had to work with and the conditions they were in.

They aren't that expensive, and Brownells is pretty easy to buy from.

1968 winchester heavy barrel target 7.62x51 with Redfield 3x9 wide view scope. Some 308 winchester
were issue in Vietnam with Redfield 3x9 and Bushnell 3x9 scopes

Close, off by two grains on the bullet weight;)

 
OK picked up the blocks from Steve Earle Problem solved.Picked up a stock from Gunville.com also shipped them the original marksman/target stock so they can make me a new one.Actions off to the local smith for fitting the repro sniper stock.should be a week or two ,will post pics.Dave
 
Very exciting projects! I also just caved and picked up a long action pre 64 on the EE. I will be looking to rebarrel it with the target profile barrel but can't find the specs. If anyone here has a link to or can quote me the barrel profile, it would be appreciated. I already have the Peter Senich book but still can't seem to find this info. Looks like a 24" straight taper...

Any help is appreciated.

(PS- The gunville.com guys are great. I bought one of their M40 stocks a few years ago and it turned out great after a little inletting work.)
