M700 5r Milspec .308 what bullet weight?

Hello I recently purchased a Remington M700 5R Milspec in .308 , the rest of the setup is Bushnell 6-24x50mm Elite tactical ,millet tactical rings and millet rail and Harris 6-9" bipod. Now I had it out a couple times trying to get it sighted in with out any luck, the two bullets I tried were hornady 168gr A-max (from what I can figure out anyways since these were the zombie ones) and some fusion 165gr. It really didn't like either of these bullets and was shooting like a shot gun( big inconsistent spread at 100 meters) after doing some research I think the 1-11.25" 5R rifling would do better with a heavier bullet.

Does anyone who has this rifle or at least some experience with it have some suggestion on a good bullet weight , just looking for weight right now until I can get set up and do my own loads. Thanks in advance for any advise with this
 
Your better off with a light bullet, i have a savage silouette twist 1 in 12, it loves 125gr sierras, also 130 to 155gr, i can get heavy slugs to shoot decent, but not the accuracy of the lightweights, pick up some AA2230C powder, some winchester brass, CCI 200 lrg rifle primers, the load i was using was 46gr, out of 22" barrel, i crony'd about 3200fps, 150yrd accuracy was Sub MOA, Ball powders like BLC-2, H380, H414, AA2230C, H335, are in my opinion the best choice in powders for 308, as well for stick powder, IMR4064 AND IMR3031, work well with the lighter bullets, hope it helps, feel free to ask questions
 
I also own the 5r but i havent had a chance to shoot it beyond 50m (yes i did say 50...) yet. Lot of people online are saying the 180gr bullets will do wonders with this rifle. Ive also been told numerous times to try the federal gold match stuff.
 
I load and shoot the 175smk, rifle bedded and trigger tuned is an honest 3/4moa grouper .

I tried the 168 range and couldn't get it to shoot worth s**t


175smk, fed primer , 42.5 (+/-) varget, .015 off the lands should do ya. Or for the longer stuff 44.5 +/-

My best results are with 168 Amax. I've tested them at 200, 630, and 890 yards, ( my spot doesn't offer me 500 or 1000 yards ) next stop is 1250. The best factory ammo I tried was Nosler Custom match grade in 168's.

Don't count out a bullet weight just cause the factory ammo isn't working too well. Save all your brass and expect much better results when you start hand-loading.

If you asked about your setup, I would suggest trying a sandbag or rest, and losing the bipod. But you only asked about bullet weight, so I won't. ;)

I've shot 168 & 175 SMK. And 168 Amax all sub MOA from my 5r.
Are you sure something isn't loose in your rail,scope setup?
I know it will also fire 178 hornady HPBT match and AMAX well.
 
The 1/11.25 twist rate was designed by Mike Rock for the barrels of the US army M24 which specifically shoots 173/175 projectiles. I shoot 175 mks out of mine and it holds 1/2 minute when I do my part.
