I was just kabitsing with a freind about a custom rifle project based on a Remington 700 long action. The question is? Whats needs to be done to the bolt when changing calibers from 30-06 (.473 rim) to a .300 Win Mag (.532 rim)?

Thanks :)
Don

You need a magnum bolt face. The present bolt can be altered or you can buy a magnum bolt and have it fitted or trade your bolt with someone that wants to convert the opposite way and have it fitted, or sell your action and buy a magnum action... this could probably cost $175 for a new bolt exchanged.

I do not recommend the Sako extractor conversion on a 700 because of all the reasons previously discussed over and over and over on this and other forums. Do a search for those discussions.

I am just having this done to an action of mine. It costs $70.00 including the new Remington factory extractor. I understand that all .473 boltfaces are machined with an extractor groove to fit both standard .473 and magnum extractors. So all that is required is to open up the counterbore to magnum size and fit the new extractor. A hole has to be drilled to fit the holding rivet on the extractor. Steve

Steve that is an excellent price. Please post the name and contact or pm me with it. I will get them done there as well.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Do you have any idea how hard the bolt face is? Can it be machined with carbide cutters?

Thanks again

Not hard - carbide cutters are not required.
