M77 22-250 tang safety

I just put a M77 22-250 tang safety on hold and was wondering what is anyones thoughts on the rifle ?

It's a bull barrel with a harris bipod and rings and in Walnut? stock. Looks to be free floated ?

Are they shooters ?
This one is in really nice shape so any idea what would be the value ?
The serial numbers are 77 0#### Does this make it around 1982 ?

I have seen the ones on the EE and they are close but not quite the same.
I think the price for this one is very good compared.


This would be my first varmit caliber and is it a good place to start ?

I picked up the same one for a buddy last summer, but with a regular barrel and no bipod for $575. He loves it, won't part with it. Check under the bolt handle to see if the recall mod has been done. Looking for a "T". Guessing you looked up the date on the Ruger page. The recall notice is there.

Edit the "T" means the mod is not needed.
 
Had a standard barrel weight one in 243. I tried every bullet weight I could get for it. Best weight bullets, best loads, on a good day I think I fired the odd five shot group to as small as 1 1/2 inches at a hundred yards! But usually couldn't repeat it.
I read where Ruger purchased the barrels for the 77s with tang safety, and some were good, some were terrible. Mine went into the latter catagory.
So, I guess you pays your money and you takes your chances.

What was the recall for? I have a 22-250 heavy barrel that was my Dads and it will shoot in the same hole all day long. Amazing coyote rifle!!
 
I have one in.280 remington. Bedded the action and had the trigger done and it's a shooter. with the right load it shoots 1/2 to 3/4 pretty regular.
 
You will really enjoy that gun, I have the same set up but with the sporter barrel. The gun fits me great.

I am not sure if yours will be free floated, I don't think so. The trigger on these is actually really nice, crisp with an easy access allen screw adjustment for weight.

It will shoot standard soft point spitzer 55gr and under extremely well. If you insist on ballistic tip bullets you may have to go 50gr and under. You will not have a problem getting groups 1in and under if you use these bullets and don't get speed crazy.

My handload is 55gr Sierra Gameking #1365 with 35gr of Varget, this should be a great starting point for you as well, 1in groups at 200 yards in my gun. If you shoot factory ammo use the Federal 55gr soft point spitzer (sierra gameking) and/or the standard grey box Winchester 55gr soft point.
