At the range today with my older tang safety M77V in 6mm rem. I got my first pierced primer. Now it won't fire at all. Just feels gritty. Looks to have cocked. But nothing. I take the bolt out and i can see the trigger moving, safety works. Could i have destroyed a firing pin or spring maybe?

I hardly even noticed the primer. Just a bit of a puff of smoke upon opening the action. But pierced.

Gun has probably seen 5000 rounds.

Slight ovaling of the firing pin hole too.

Thanks

Took the bolt apart. Was a tiny piece of primer stuck in the taper near the face. Back to normal now. Glad i wasn't on a hunt.

Primers piercing is an incorrect term but commonly used... the firing pin does not pierce the primer, the primer fails and blows outwards over the firing pin tip and into the firing pin hole with the escaping gas sometimes cutting the bolt face and/or firing pin tip.

I have noticed though that my primers are getting a bit of a slight ridge around the primer strike. Almost a volcano. Slight ovaling of the firing pin hole in the bolt. Gun has had lots of use.
Today was CCI 200 primers.

Remove the striker from the bolt and get the piece of primer, which was blown back into the bolt, out of there. It is blocking the firing pin. Get ready to replace the striker spring since it is probably collapsed and may not have sufficient energy for reliable ignition.
