Have a 77 tang in 7mmRM just wondering if anyone has had luck free floating these? The barrel looks fairly thin, thinking maybe it needs the up pressure maybe Im wrong

I have a 1974 vintage M77 Ruger in 270 with what I consider to be a "pencil" barrel. It was accurate enough for me right out of the box but over the years the barrel began to make contact with the stock and the accuracy dropped off. Not ugly bad but not as well as it used to shoot. I played with my handloads a fair amount attempting to find a problem but No Joy. Then I tried the paper around the barrel trick and found an odd contact point. So I relieved the stock a bit until I could slide a paper business card between the barrel and the stock. This returned the barrel to better than new accuracy so I am very happy. Being a thin barrel it will make the first two holes touching and generally throws a flier on the third but still maintains moa or better accuracy.
That's my two cents.

is the barrel floated now? slide your $5 bill through. if it is, fold a business card and insert between the forened and barrel, shoot it. did it get better? yes, bed and do forend pressure. No change or worse, bed the action and first couple inches of the barrel, to the the end of the chamber and shoot again.

Or, just bed the action properly, free float the entire barrel, and enjoy a good-shooting, consistent rifle.
