M95 Premature firing.

Just got a really nice steyr m95 straight pull rifle. When I took it shooting it fired while I was cocking it twice. Wondering if anyone else has come across a similar problem with theirs and what possible solutions are. The rifle in question at the top.

Dirt build up or something is worn. Sticking firing pin was my first thought. Take apart and clean and look for anything that is worn.
Sear my not be engaging properly and slipping. Without having a hands on it’s going to be a guess what is happening. I have three carbines and they always run well. Has the bolt been taken apart and cleaned recently?

Do you mean it fired as you pushed the bolt home?

If so - I have seen this a number of times on various milsurps over the years.

It could be a few things, weak trigger / sear spring (allowing it to drop below normal operating height), worn sear, or worn sear engagement surface on the bolt / cocking piece, etc.

Any of those would allow the bolt to close and simultaneously allow the firing pin to follow.

It would likely be enough to set off a commercial primer, especially PPU.

Ok, so it is likely one of those issues.

Before you start replacing parts, I would completely disassemble, clean, and reassemble.

Inspect all of the bearing / contact surfaces to see if anything is abnormal. If you are not comfortable doing so, I am certain a CGN member in your area would be able to assist, perhaps someone at your local range who is familiar with this stuff. If you are local GTA (Ontario), I don't mind helping.

But do the cleaning first, and see if it helps. Might just be some grease / gunk messing with parts.
