M96/38 Scout REVISED

Well, it is his property, and he can do with it whatever he wants to. If the rifle was in original shape at the start, it is too bad that another collectable milsurp, and as pointed out, an already hacked one or a sporter from Trade-Ex could have been used. As a Swedish rifle proponent, I do not like to see an original one altered, and we see on this website quite a few posts on "Where have all the milsurps gone?. This is one answer to the question.

After over 50 years of hunting all across Canada, there are a couple of points with this one that I do think a hunting rifle should have. One is auxillary open iron sights. I have seen quite a few scopes knocked out of kilter by careless baggage handlers or rough truck rides, and even broken scopes without any spare scope packed. (There are a LOT of people who spend thousands of dollars on a hunting trip, but do not put an extra scope and tool kit in their luggage --- and a lot of them even but the cheapest ammunition they can to go with it.) Iron sights can be used easily out to 200 yards, and can save a hunt. The second thing is the mirror shiny finish. Even on factory rifles, I have observed hunters several miles away on a mountainside "flashing" like a signal light because of the sunlight reflected off a rifle stock. (Did you take the sunglasses off the Deer for the photos? ----LOL)

Other than that, the approximately 20 inch barrel is handy and efficient in the dark black timber of a Western Elk range or an Eastern Cedar swamp, and I have taken more than my share of large game animals with a Ruger 77 Carbine in .308 Winchester Calibre.

Wow tough crowd. No surprise I guess given the audience.

Where are you guys finding $150 Sporter swedes? Tradex wants $250 + and I didn't see any in 6.5. They were also only asking $300 for the only non Sporter M96 listed (sold out it appears).

I've been wanting to do something similar as the OP with either a Swede or Lee Enfield No. 4. I cannot find an affordable bubba'd rifle for a project. People are asking $300+ for these custom gems.

I think the the overall execution of the rifle could be refined bu I for one like it. I also noticed that he never talked about the original condition. It could have already had a chopper barrel.

I'm not a fan of the glossy look, but it makes sense in the field I guess.

That said, I think you did an excellent job, and I think it looks great.

To all who do not like the rifle. I think it is neat. I will be doing the same thing to a K98 I just purchased. For those who get upset over a milsurp to bad. I use to have a collection of every firearm used by the Canadian Military. There are a lot. At one time I have over 150 rifles. I am now down to just 14. I now prize them more than the collection I had. At least I can shoot and enjoy them. As I grew older I come to believe that collections are one of two things, hoarding or want a be. That is my 2 cents. Just my age kicking in.

Actually a M96/38 has already been altered and chopped.
The barrel was shortened or replaced, bolt handle bent, sights changed, stock cut. This was factory work, do tecnically it's still original, but if this is more useful, so be it.

Well, nothing like insulting collectors, eh?

I was just trying to make a point. Gun owners are there own worst enemy. Some firearm owners get insulting when an individual modifies a firearm to suit their needs or wishes. When an individual owns a firearm it is theirs, we might not agree on any modification but it is their rifle. As for collecting I still do have mine only smaller (want changed), my wife calls me a hoarder due the firearm and accessories that I have, want be part I seen on some stupid movie I think it was "The Last Castle"

As firearm owner we should support each other if not we are doomed. I tough enough now to be an firearms owner.

I believe in a statement an old friend of my use to say "All guns are nice, some just nicer the others."

Sorry but I am never going to support someone destroying history for there own personal pleasure. I cannot stop them, but I can tell them it is stupid and they do not have my approval.

It might be your property for the moment but in the future it will not be. I can't even begin to say how many times I have seen someone do a permanent modification to a old military rifle and claim 'I will have it forever so it doesn't matter' then two months later see it on the EE. I personally look at my collection as preserving history, the less people that do it, the less history others can experience and enjoy. Old military firearms are one of the few tangible ways that we can physically connect with the past, and get a idea how life was for someone else. There is very little else you can go out and buy in this day and age from over 100 years ago that is still intact and working like it was intended to. Most people I know don't even own something from within the last 50 years unless it is a one off like a heirloom or there house, I personally own quite a bit more than that.

Nice deer!

November 25 2016, noon time cruiser. 115 year old rifle drops deer.

Beauty! Tasty beast. As the young one's say, haters gotta hate.I wouldn't have done it to the rifle myself, but, hey, it's not my rifle and it beats the hell outa what the gun haters would do to all our toysG:. I have put a long eye relief scope on a couple of my milsurps but I use the S&K mounts that don't require altering the rifle at all. Enjoy your venison.

I learned not to disrespect any one over what they do with their property. My brother had a 1940's Olds, one of the back windows was cracked. He found a replacement. The individual who had the replacement wanted $150 for the glass. My brother offered him $125.00 and mentioned to bad he had the car crushed as it was rare. That individual did not even counter, he threw the window on the ground and destroyed it. His response was that the window was worthless to him which it was. It only have value to an owner of that car. Same as any personal property.

I use to cringe with certain items I sold from my collection to find out that they were modified for every day use or sporterized. I have now out grown that feeling. Once sold the item is no longer mine and I got the price I wanted. To say we are losing our history so be it, the leaders of our country are doing a fine job of that.

There is a difference between disrespecting someone and not supporting there actions. I don't give my opinion on it unless asked, once asked I tell them what my opinion on the matter is. They can still do what they want with the property, and I am not bothering them unless they make it a point of bothering me.
