I did a search on this one and couldn't find an answer. I have a Stiga M96 with iron sights. I can't decide if I want to mount the 3-9x40 scope I have for it on Weaver see-thru mounts to have the irons as back-ups, or if I want to put on regular rings. I was messing around with some crapola NcStar see-through rings I have laying around and found that my cheek was pretty light on the comb. Would this be a problem re: consistent sighting and/or getting slapped in the cheekbone? If I put on regular rings, would I want to use low, medium, or high ones? My guess is "high" due to clearance for the safety, but I have no practical experience with the M96 to base this on. Any input is appreciated.

Good luck! I'm trying to get a scope on my bubba'd 96 and so far after 3 set of rings I have one hand, no luck. Between the poorly bent scope handle and the safety I think I'm gonna have to settle on Burris 30mm Zee Extra highs.

I will enthusiastically opine, that the ideal set up would be a bolt handle that allows low/med QD rings(leupold QRW?), and a bolt shroud mounted safety(Buehler lo-swing)that is usable with a low scope. This way you achieve a decent cheek weld, access to both irons/scope, and a functional safety.
My most practical M96/Falun/Stiga/M38's wear low rings with the lower powered scopes, and mediums with the 10X target turreted mil dot glass.

If yours has the straight shafted M38 type handle that is projecting from the bolt body at 45 degrees, that handle can be re-attached in close to the bolt body, and dished a bit to clear your optics. Or, a Tally or Ruger m77 type will also work. The receiver's tang will need to be notched.

The Stiga stock is a nice one, with good feel, and a comb hight that works with both irons and a low scope. For me, using a medium hight ring requires a velcro'd on 3/8ths" thick comb pad, for good cheek weld.

A crisp bored, well bedded, handloaded, scoped Stiga .... will really shoot.:D

Never yet been slapped in the cheekbone by any Swede.

Thanks for the replies friends. I'm not too keen on the idea of messing around with the bolt handle on my rifle, so I will likely wind up going with a high set of rings and a cheek pad for the nicer weld. Right now I am leaning toward see-thrus so that the irons remain functional. Again, thanks.

Well, I've been doing a bit of research. As far as Weaver goes, I would have to use their "extra high" ring on my bases. I forgot to mention that I purchased my rifle through Trade-Ex and it came with Weaver bases on it. The NcStar rings I was playing with for experimentation purposes provide 0.44" clearance between the top of the bases and the bottom of the scope tube. That was jusssst enough for smooth bolt action and clearance for the safety, but the rings are unusable for my purpose (cheap & flimsy). The Weaver website has a ring chart with "saddle height" measurements, and by that chart "high" rings are 0.33", "extra high" are 0.56", and see-thru rings are 0.75". I'll let you know what I end up with and how it works out.
