M96 Swed Mauser stock split

I have a really nice M96 Swed Sporter in 6.5x55 I picked up off of Trade Ex that does not have a split stock at the rear of the action on the pistol grip. The M96 seems to routinely split in that area. A buddy of mine told me I need to get a metal sleeve for the rear action screw to prevent the stock from splitting.

Is that true? If so, who in Canada sells them?

My old 1917 has a pillar for the rear action screw.

The most simple pillars I have seen yet were made with brass ose barbs

NOT TRUE. If the stock has survived this long without a rear tang crack, it most likely will not form a crack.

A mauser will split at rear of action because the action is moving rearward during recoil. Most common issue is that the action's recoil lug is not tight against the stock's recoil recess, or the the stock's cross bolt if it has one. Can be simple fix with a shim ( strip or two from a beer can). I don't recall seeing a military 98 that did not have a rear action screw sleeve. From "The Crown Jewels" book, can't find a print or drawing of the 94's or 96's that did not have the sleeve.

Instead of relying on beer cans etc., many modern gunsmiths will utilize epoxy bedding compound behind the recoil lug to prevent stock splitting. The guard screw sleeves used were to prevent the stock from compressing when the screw was tightened.

Thanks Lads. How tight it fits into the lug recess makes sense. I will pull it apart and see if I even need to worry about it.

Use acarglass or super glue to fix the crack. Then bed the recoil lug and relieve the wood at the rear tang slightly.
