M96 Swede Safety?

I just picked up a nice M96 but have found the safety is a little finicky. I cocked the rifle and attempted to flip the safety over to the safe position and it wouldn't budge. Had to manually pull back on the bolt body a little to allow me to flip over the safety to the "ON" position. Don't have to do this with the other M96 I had. Any ideas as to why this is happening? In terms of Milsurps, I've always been a Lee-Enfield guy, but am starting to get into the Swedes, so I'm still a relative newbie. Any help, input or advice from you Swede Gurus out there would be appreciated!:D
 
I am thinking a worn sear allowing the firing pin to go a bit farther than it should. (or a worn striker) Have seen this on enfields where the safety is on the rear of the bolt.

I had this problem before; and once the safety was engaged, if I pulled the trigger the safety would "click". And, when I would take the safety off, the rifle would fire :runaway:

Turns out bubba never figured out how to put the bolt back together and #### it before screwing the bolt body together....so he proceeded to grind down the part that was in his way, an eighth of an inch of metal on the end of the safety :confused:

so anyway, I bought a new safety from the US. It is stiff (and mis-matched grrrrr:mad: ), but it works. :cool:
 
I find by polishing the groves on the safety lever realy helps. Also reduces or eliminates the "clicking noises" when moving the safety lever from safety to fire :)

I used a "Dremel" type polisher to improve the safety.
 
Bolt

Check that your bolt pivots COMPLETELY down. If not:
1-Check the locking lugs recesses for a small debris.
2-Sometimes, the wood for the stock is a tad higher than it should be, just under the bolt handle root, and the bolt doesn't go fully into battery.
It's a matter of about 1/32 to 1/16" of thickness. This makes the safety hard to engage.
I had that problem with an M-38 with the turned-down bolt handle; the replacement stock came from an M-96/38 and there was not enough allowance for it.

Not sure what's going on. When the rifle is cocked, I need to pull back on the bolt/striker assembly about 1/4" and I can flip the safety over to safe. Once it is engaged, the rifle is safe and it will not fire. I can then flip the safety back to fire fairly easily. Firing pin doesn't drop and the rifle would not have an unintentional discharge. Trigger can be pulled as normal at this point.

Funny thing is, when the rifle isn't cocked, I can very easily flip the safety to both the middle position and the safe position with no difficulty. What do you guys think?

BTW: I'm looking for Front Sight Shrouds for an M-96 & an M-38, as well as a cleaning rod to fit the latter. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Had something similar with my 1908 CG M96, however my safety was too loose :( Turns out it would engage after firing a round, bubba had really had at this safety with a grinder or something. Ended up having to replace it with a mismatched safety. :mad:
