Mac Fergus Falls MN stamped on barrel?

Why would MAC FERGUS FALLS MN be stamped on a circa 1893 Winchester barrel? It appears to be a city in the US that goes by Fergus Falls currently.

I emailed a city historian, the town was never called Mac Fergus Falls, MAC is an acronym for something. The historian suggested it may stand for a military company and be a military issued gun (did they use single shots in the military in the 1890's?). Further research costs $15/hr so I'm not sure if I'll go any further with this.

Another update. The gun came from Merz Antiques in Fergus Falls, MN. I just noticed this while shredding the mailing labels on the box. Would a dealer stamp a gun?
