Macmillan A5 or alternative?

Hey I was looking to put a new stock on my Rem 700 in 6mm. Rifle is a couple of decades old. Previous owner did some custom work on it, it has a jeweled bolt. Even though I am not very good, I can pretty much shoot 1 inch groups with factory stuff. I wanted the stock for a combination of adjusting cheek and LOP. Otherwise that and a flat forend for maybe a Harris would be great. I like the A5 with the pistol style grip, hook and adjustments. Are there alternatives I should look at? If so what? Wanted to spend about 750$ or so. BTW I have seen alot of conflicting stuff on bedding, some say yes..some say no.... what should I go with?

The only person I am gonna be competing with is myself. So it doesnt have to conform to any regs for any events.:D
 
The A-5 is a fine stock, but depending what options you choose, it may slightly exceed your estimated budget. Check out similarly equipped stocks by Robertson and H-S Precision. All of these stocks are top quality, so it's just a matter of getting the best bang for your buck. I've got 2 McMillan stocked rifles, and I had to wait quite a while for them to come in. With regards to bedding - a thousand dollar stock with the action just dropped in is about as good as a Ram-Line....spend the hundred bucks to have it properly bedded!
 
The McMillan stocks are excellent and we bring them in on a regular basis. The problem with McMillan is the high demand and you could be faced with a lengthy delivery. If you can handle the different look of Robertson stocks, they are also an option. Made right here in Canada. Too bad they just won't model some McMillan style stocks. I know of numerous people who would try them out but in most instances the Robertson stocks carry a unique look about them. Since weight is not a concern, the Robertson line might be a good fit and I suspect since they don't do the volume that McMillan does, delivery should be better.
 
I had a McMillan A5 in my hands at Ian Roberston's shop when I was considering buying either an A5 or a Roberston stock. I was not really impressed with the A5 stock and I am now having my second Robertson stock made as we speak; this one is for my muzzleloader :).

My first stock from Robertson was supposed to be the Interceptor, but I ended up with the Ranger since it fit me much better.
 
Go with a Robertson Interceptor with the adjustable cheek piece and butt spacer system. I am having one done now for a clients Savage LE - 10.

Why:
- you can not beat the quality
- They are made here in Canada
- You won't have to wait a year to get it
and did i mention that they are made here in Canada!
 
Price will vary with the options that you want.
If you check out the website the 2004 price list is still current as far as i know. You can look at the options and add them up with your calculator.
