Made meat with my Ruger no 3

Shot this Doe on the first day of opening season with my Ruger no 3 in 44mag.One shot kill at 75 yards,I picked this gun up this summer and it s a keeper.

The number 3 carries like a dream in the woods and the 44mag cal doesn t recoil like the 45/70 cal in this gun.I think if Ruger had of chambered the no 3 in 44mag ,357mag, 22lr and 22 mag when it was introduced it still would be in production.
 
I owned one in 375 Win. My only complaint was the recoil due to the curved plastic butt plate. The design (with the butt plate curved into the top of the stock) wasn't conducive to adding a proper recoil pad without major work on the butt stock or else a complete replacement. With max. loads and the 220 grain bullet it was quite accurate, usually about 1" at 100 yards. After a couple of years of playing around with it, including home cast bullets, it went down the road so I could try something else.

Nice meat fer the freezer! I've owned No.3's in 45-70 & 30-40 Krag.
The 45-70 was a bruiser for sure and the 30-40 was much less so, but
both were accurate shooters. I recently passed on a .375 Win. chambered one
cause I got a minty Winchester 94 Big Bore from a buddy instead.

I would love one in .22 Hornet. Happy eatin'.:)

Not sure if you are aware about the .44 mag chambering in the Ruger #3 being a rare breed? Over at the "Ruger.com forum" there is a thread that has a list of serial numbered guns that can be found to see how many of these #3's in 44 mag that actually exist. So far there are many less than 200 units.

From my research & inquiries over the years it seems only about 200 or less of these actually exist. Ruger would know, but they have never released the numbers....

Might I encourage you to add your serial no to that list if you haven't already.

So do I,I ve taken deer with a 44mag before as I use to own a crazy accurate Browning 92 and stupidly sold it.I was actually looking for another B92 in44mag when I was offered the Ruger and since I couldn't t find a decent B92 I jumped on it and I m glad I did.I always liked the looks of the No3 but heard stories of unpleasant recoil with the 45/70 so I always passed on them when I saw one.The 44mag in this gun is a perfect fit, it is a shame they didn t make more of them in this cal.
