Been trying to figure out what my next rifle is gonna be. I am going with a Tikka T3 Lite, Opti-Lock rings/bases, Leupold Rifleman 3X9X40 in the .270 WSM. Was at the local shop today, its gonna be around $1200.00 with a Tikka case and sling included. Just gotta get the cash together now, then look-out. :)
 
Nice choice! How come you decided to go with the rifleman? Why not something just a little higher quality? A VX-II or III would be a much better choice IMO ;)

Basically, it comes down to the toughest part about buying a new rifle, paying for it. They have a Burris, can't remember the model #, but its pretty nice as well and a little more money that the Leupold, but all the guys I know swear by Leupold.
 
Skip the 200 dollar optilocks and get a set of Talley Lightweight rings for your T3 (lighter, just as strong and look way better too) You can get them from Corlanes for about 60-70 bucks?
Then use the extra money you saved to put on top of the Rifleman and upgrade it to at least the VX I line, or better yet the VX II:cool:

Agreed

teh Talley lightweigths are great rings, and you want a better scope than the Leupold Rifleman scopes...get a VX II

Paying for it is the tough part for sure! But you will be much happier in the end if you go with the better optics.

I can tell you first hand that an Elite 3200 is a little short in eye relief for a T-3 light chambered in 270WSM.
I am a fan of the Leupolds as well and they are my first choice but the inexpensive Burris Fullfield scopes work well and have excellent eye relief!
 
Without a doubt, there is a greater selection of .284 bulllets than .277 bullets, but there is a bullet made in .277 for anythign you could possibly think of doing with a 270 or 7mm.....

I woudl not base my choice between 270WSM and 7mmWSM on bullet availabilty, there is no point.
 
Don't handload, so that has no bearing. On the ballistics tables I found, the .270 WSM is faster and harder hitting than the 7 mm mag, if I am reading the tables right. Stoney Creek is gonna get my money for sure, did some checking online, pricing is right in line, maybe a little more, but well worth it to support a local shop. The difference in cost would more than be made up after factoring in fuel and other shopping done on a trip to Edmonton.
 
I've got a Leupold Rifleman on my Savage .270 WSM - I've never had a problem with it, good scope. I've got the 2-7. And since you're shooting factory, I'd stay away from the Ballistic silvertip Winchester loads if there's any chance you'll be shooting within 100 yards. They blow up real good. The federal line of premium stuff is pretty good for my WSM, and the power-points actually seemed to hold together better than the ballistic tips at close range. But it's tough to beat those factory Barnes TSXs.

How's Stoney Creeks's supply of WSM ammo? The selection for WSM loads in Edmonton isn't great at Wholesale, but P&D has pretty much every factory load made. But the Barnes will run you 50 bucks a box. I'm just waiting for my reloading stuff to show up cause of the price for factory.

But I hope you like the new gun - I love mine.
 
Didn't really look to much at their selection yet, but I will be running the Federal Premium ammo, worked good for me in the past. Hopefully I can find one with the camo stock.
 
They don't make talleys for Tikka or Sako rifles, beacuase of the integrated scope rail. I second or third, spend the moeny ona better scope. The Burris is a better scope than a leupold rifleman. Leupld scpes don't start to get to be good until the VX-11 line.
 
Been doing a little of my own research, I will be going with the Burris scope, believe its the Fullfield 2, and I was wrong, the rings are from Burris, not Opti-Lock.

If you want to save $200 more, skip the camo stock and get the black synthetic. All the camo T3's I've looked at are $180 - $200 more. Dump the stock savings into the scope;)
