I'll be getting my IPSC gear soon and I'd like to add mag changes to my range practice. But I'm thinking that this won't work so well if the magazines fall to the table and then bounce out into the active area ahead of the booth if they go out of range of the broom. So I'm thinking of bringing a box to let them drop into.

Or is there some other sort of normal way to practice mag swapouts at the range?

practice at home,..much easier on your mags. Pick one mag and fill it with dummy rounds and/or snap caps. Use a couple other mags and try some with no rounds,..and some with 1 or 2 rounds in them,..and use those as mags you plan on dumping to the ground. Start slow/ smooth,..then add some movement. (although it is almost always better to do mag changes before you start really moving). Travis Tomassie has a reload video + another video clip from the AMU,..talks about proper hand eye and gun positioning.

You can also get a dump pouch - strap it on the outside of your thigh and instead of dropping your mags put 'em there. Or do a tactical mag change instead of a dump.

practice at home is best. u can drop them on carpeted floor or onto a pillow (wear shoes so u don't drop them on your feet)

u can also practice doing it with your eyes closed. :D

if you are going to play IPSC doing tac mag changes is a waste of time and energy.
as the guys said above, do them at home, get some snap caps (like 50) so you can also practice slide lock mag changes and releasing your slide, however you'd like to do it.
I will often sit on the couch with my gun and mags and practice mag changes while shooting at the TV. using annoying characters as the cue to change them, or in my office while cursing at my computer.
at the range use a big drop cloth folded up a bunch to soften the landing and allow you to pull the mags back if they fall forward of the line. just remember, always holster before bending over to pick up mags.

Sorry, I don't have that many mags and couldn't afford to buy THAT many.... :D

........... or in my office while cursing at my computer......

Uh... network admin here..... Again, not enough mags and in this case the urge to use live ammo would be FAR too appealing..... then there's the whole issue of the "ab"-users that I support at work if the guns were too close at hand..... :p

Reloads on the move

Check out reloads on the move. It is on IPSC Ont web site under Articles of interest.

I'm guessing you meant this article?

That's a slick idea. But it is only good for range setups without alleys that use shields between shooting stations. The range guys here would have coniptions if they caught me doing this and rightly so since it wouldn't be that safe at the range I shoot at just now.

I'll keep that in mind for if I find an open air firing line type setup in the future though. He really thought that procedure out well. And up to a point I can do the same in my own situation but without the movement aspect.
