Magazine Crimping?

Crimped (in this case) means they've pushed in the side of the mag at the 5 round capacity (as this is a 30 round magazine) so that only 5 rounds can be inserted. Take a look at the bottom pic and you'll see the crimp.

You could always un-crimp and then rivet it instead...but it does have to be blocked to 5 rounds somehow. You can't get it to have 10 rounds like the LAR pistol mags (just in case that was what you were after).

Okay, okay. So can it be un-crimped or would that be illegal.

That would be modifying the magazine to accept more than the legal limit for the firearm and cartridge it was designed and manufactured for, which would make it a prohibited device.

Hmm, unless it's treated the same as the regular LAR-15 10 round magazine, in which case it could be altered to hold 10 rounds and still be legal since it's a pistol magazine. That's not legal advice, I'm not sure if the 30 rounder counts as a pistol magazine(10 round limit) or a semiauto centerfire magazine(5 round limit). Since it's crimped to 5 it might have been ruled to count as a rifle magazine.

"...pushed in the side of the mag..." Don't think that counts. The civil servants have ruled on exactly how a mag has to be damaged, I mean altered to hold only 5 for a rifle mag. Has to be riveted, as I recall.
As mentioned, removing the rivet or whatever is illegal. A centre fire rifle mag that holds more than 5 is illegal all by itself.
