I received this magazine along with a couple of firearms, but it doesn’t fit anything. There are no markings to indicate the make. The magazine is symmetrical left to right. Can anyone advise?

I know it is not Savage/Lakefield MKII, Anschutz 64 or a Winchester 69.

Could fit Winchester 490. I believe they are a 1 of type magazine. They came in 5 or 10 shot.
Some of the 500 series Remington's look like that also. Try to find something that has the same little notch half way down the back of the curve. That will be your best chance unless someone knows it rite off..

I have one that looks the same, but 5 round. I can't confirm Archer Sam's ID, I got it with some ammo my brother in law found while cleaning out an old farm house. At first I thought it was for a Savage MKII, but definitely no.

It's not a 490 magazine. They have a tab/notch thing protruding from the spine. This one has two small v cuts to retain the mag.

Remington 5xx series is possible. It does look identical to the magazine pictured on Brownells website, but doesn't seem to match any other references for 5xx magazines.

Additional research indicates it may be a Stevens magazine that fits the: Savage or Stevens Savage Arms / Stevens Models 1, 2, 4C, 4CD, 4E, 7, 7A, 7H, 19 (Serial # 45,000 and up), 19-33, 26C, 33, 34, 35, 56, 56C, 056C, 57, 057, 54, 65, 84, 084, 840S, 084S, 84C, 84CDS, 84CD, 84S, 84E, 85, 085, 85A, 85E, 85K, 85KE, 85H, 416, 420, 850, & 850H in 22 LR. Also fits the Westpoint 435.

Good lord that's a long list.

I'm thinking the Savage/Stevens list is probably correct based on pictures I have come across to. And yes that is a crap load of models for 1 magazine to fit.

I just checked a little Stevens/Savage/Springfield rifle. The magazine is just 5 shot, but looks like the one posted.

I guess I did not look closely enough at your picture. I was looking mainly at the shape of the stamped sides, which appear to be the same or very similar. Mine does not have the notches, it does have a "tab" on the spine and another "tab" on the front of the mag. Does that sound right for a 490 mag? I know pics would help, but I don't know to post them here. Sorry for hijacking your thread also.

Unfortunately, the general shape isn't much to go on as it would seem that someone designed this pattern of magazine, then every manufacturer under the sun used basically the same pattern with very minor modifications to fit their needs.
Remington, Savage, Anschutz, Stevens, Springfield, Winchester (and I'm sure more) all seem to use, or previously used, this basic pattern.

I did some research and it would appear that 490 magazines have protrusions on the front and spine of the magazine.

That mag has a cut out notch which will allow it to fit into a specific rifle.

However, it's a "generic" type magazine, used by several firearms manufacturers.

All that is required to fit it to just about any rifle that takes this type of magazine is to cut new notches that are appropriate for that particular rifle.

I don't know if they're still available but Tradex used to sell them without notches, so they could be adapted to several different rifles by gunsmiths or even people at home who had another magazine to copy the notch position from.

I don't know what the notch cut outs on your magazine are intended to fit but if you have a rifle that will take that magazine, copy the notches onto it and use it.

Tradex used to sell them for $20, uncut.

I soldered a pad onto the back of a blank and cut a notch on the front edges to make up a magazine for a Husky 22 repeater I picked up from Tradex, that was very cheap because it didn't have a magazine. The Remington mag suggested was around $65 and still needed work to fit.

I think it's for a Savage Model 4 & Stevens 56 84 & 85 plus some others from that line up.

There's one on gunbroker now "Savage Mod 4 Stevens 56 84 85 10rd Orig Magazine"

+1 on savage 4

had two 4c models over the years,
sold the last one week ago so don't have one at the moment to sent picture of unfortunately.
