Magazine Issues

Hey there everyone, I am new to these forums and looking for a little assistance. I just purchased my first M14 this past weekend. The first thing I did was take it home, break it down and clean the crap out of it. I went to the range yesterday to start trying to zero my scope but ran into a problem. My clip pops out of the groove like an 1/8" after every shot so the bolt just skips over the next round in the magazine not loading it into the chamber. I know I reassembled it right but this bugs me. Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

There should be a very solid click when you rock the magazine in* and the mag release engages, and it can take quite a bit of muscle if you're inserting a loaded mag on a closed bolt. If you're getting a definite click then I'd suggest marking the bearing surfaces with a sharpie (the top flat edge of the mag release and the bottom flat edge of the block on the back of the mag) and seating it a few times to look for where the sharpie gets rubbed off. If you can post pics of the results that may be helpful.

*you're rocking it in, right? Not trying to insert it straight up the mag well?

Another thing to check (though I can't imagine it being the issue) is the op rod spring guide, make sure that's not interfering with your magazine seating properly.

Thanks guys, I will check this out for sure!
Pop, you bet I am rolling it in. There is a notch on the magazine that has to go to the spring rod and it rolls in from there. I get a click for sure and gave it a good tap on the bottom after to seat it as well. This is why it is so confusing because I have never heard that before. (Still new to the M14 family though)

Yeah it could just be the mag latch isn't square or is otherwise out of spec. The sharpie evidence should be telling. Also, if you can take pics of the mag latch with the trigger group removed, from all angles square on, that would help see if there's any obvious problems with it.

Forgot to ask, does this happen with other magazines too or just the one?

Check the mag catch pivot roll pin. Mine was toast from the get go. It was split length wise and sagging. The latch wasn't positioned proper. Gave me all kinds of hard to diagnose mag seating/feeding issues.

lock bolt open. insert mag, should not come out if you tug hard. push cartridge platform down enough to see where the spring guide engages the notch. should sit flush with the inside of mag. sharpie idea is good to see how everything engages, both ends. let us know how it turns out.

Ok, I deleted these pics..

This is the part I dont get and has me confused which led to me posting here. It all fits snuggly together. Sorry did not do a sharpie test yet though.

I was there when he made the shots. it was interesting because the gun seemed to be cycling well while I watched it. I could see the action slide back after firing and the 5rounder. drop about 1/8"
what is also concerning to me is how damaged 2 of the casings were (post those pics too.) they were destroyed.

like gnmontey stated , it is not totally uncommon for these rifles to have collapsed mag release roll pins. Not super common, but not uncommon.
I've seen this exact issue a few dozen times. Hopefully that is all it is as it is a simple fix with a new pin.

I remember having a similar issue with mine when I first got it. Magazines were really hard to insert and would pop out and scuff the brass after a few shots on all 3 magazines.
I figured out the mag catch wasn't Getting underneath the block on the spine of the magazine.
Took a grinder and ground some off the tip of the magazine catch so there was more room for the catch to get under the block and lock it in.

I also ground the face of the magazine catch to make it thinner and apply less pressure when it rode the back of the magazine. No issues with it since. I have thought about tweaking it more just to make mag changes easier.
