A number of years ago my friend Rick from R and R Bullets was looking for molds for his Magma Engineering semi-auto caster to produce. I suggested he buy the ME 155 grain cast bullets for 40 caliber.

Probably the best 40 caliber cast bullet from my point of view, this 155 SWC, is an easy shooting, target quality, bullet. Unfortunately this is a 2 cavity mold.

I have toyed with the idea of sending one of these bullets to LEE to make a custom 6 cavity mold. Again unfortunately, the LEE custom mold process makes this mold project uneconomical (C$300.00). Plus LEE retains the rights to the mold.

Thoughts?

well, why not use the magma mold? there is a guy called red river rick, has a website called KAL tool and die, he makes mold handles that would fit.
i think lyman 2 cavity mold handles will work as well. i vaguely remember also making some minor mods to my magma mold with a machine shop but im not sure if that was due to fitting the mold handles or just for adding the temp probe hole to the mold blocks.
anyway, it cost way less than $300

Get on the NOE forum and start a thread in the group buy discussions. If there's enough interest you can send a few as cast bullets to Swede Nelson and he will cut molds for a group buy. And they're far far better than any Lee mold. Or get Accurate Molds to make a one off for you. Then it will be in his catalog for anyone to order. I've never used an Accurate mold but I hear great things about them too.

For a custom mold I would want something of high finished quality. Lee will make a good serviceable product and they will stand behind it, but the others listed above would be my first choice.
Boomer, IIRC does single cavity iron molds.

There is also Arsenal molds worth checking out.
