Magnetospeed question

I just ordered a magnetospeed sporter, it should be arriving any day now, and I'd like to connect it to my phone. My samsung doesn't have a headphone jack, Samsung is a usb-C or nothing.
My android tablet has both usb-C and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

So do I absolutely need the 60 dollar magnetospeed connection cable, or does any 3.5mm headphone jack work?

You could always try a usb c to headphone jack off Amazon for $10 bucks or so.

I did this with my iPhone usb c (no headphone jack either) and it works great on my chronograph
