Magnified optics options for Shorty AR?

I have the Larue mount. I really like it alot. Nice little kit, even comes with a mini tube of locktight and midget wrench. I am planning on buying the Larue mount for a my scope as well. I have noticed no zero loss when I remove the aimpoint mount and put it back on.

The Spectre has a NUMBER of issues.
The ARMS levers being simply one area of contention of the end user.

USSOC trialed then -- they are on revision 18 (or close to) -- the DR Optic attachment was made due to the fact the stupid thing has a nasty habit of changing zero from the 1x setting to the 4x setting and vice versa.

As for the C79/C79A2 -- anyone who beleives it is robust combat scope needs experience with other optics.

Both BigRed and I run S&B Short Dots -- we are no longer gov't employees and that optic is bought with our dollars. Several members of US .soc units have SHort Dots on their 10.5 HK416's.

As for what optic is best for you -- that is your decision based upon the need that you require to be fufilled.

I shot a guy at near 400m with a 10.5" upper with a Short Dot - so dont let anyone tell you the system cant.

That said -- for most 10" roles -- I would go with an EOTECH - since I view that barrel length as a specific Niche role.

I used the same Elcan C79 for 4 years, and the abuse that it stood up to was amazing. On top of that, it's s__t simple to zero. However, am NOT a C79 fan. My biggest problem is that it is too bulky.
The Spector is a great sight, in concept. The 1-4X flip would be great, if it worked, but it doesn't. A number of the sights have alignment problems, namely, if you zero on 4X, your POI at 1X is about 4.5" high & left. Apparently the new ones have sorted out that problem, but I haven't shot them. Another consideration for the Spector, is that apparently the BDC in it was designed to corespond with a 14.5" barrel. no big deal at close ranges, but you need to spend some time on the range to figure out where your rounds will land at 400-500 metres.
The Aimpoint is a great CQB sight, and the 3X magnifier is a good idea too. But when you have both on your rifle, they're not only heavier than the C79, they take up way more room. Also, if you have your 3X magnifier stuffed in your kit somewhere, when the time comes to shoot somebody 300 metres away, you start shooting with the 1X, and don't bother to pull the magnifier out.
The Acog/Dr optic combo is probably your best bet, but also has some drawbacks. you definitely need to get used to barrel-sight relationship when using the Dr, because even zeroed for 50m, your POI at 10 metres (across the inside of a compund) is still 2-3" below your POA.
For no light the answers easy, PEQ2/PEQ4. But for low light, and civilian use, I suggest a good laser sight. YES I said it, a laser sight. Trust me on this one, they work.
That's all I've got.

in the end I went with an IOR 1.1x4 CQB illuminated scope. Happy with it. Made some decent shots out to 200 yards so far.

^^ I agree with above, since you have Aimpoint the Aimpoint 3X magnifier on Samson quick flip mount is the ticket.

isnt there something going on with Samson? theres another post about it.

i say go Elcan. or the 3x magnifier.

elcan is sort of heavy scope. i took it off the other day to practice with my iron sights and woOh did the gun feel lighter.

I like the larue mount. Holds the magnifier in the 'not in use' position and it is very simple (not much to go wrong).

Frankly I'm not a big magnifier fan (they always seem to get in the way to me)

I think running a shorty your best off with just an Aimpoint or an EOTECH

I'm with Kevin. For a shorty, CQT type build, an EoTech would be about the cat's meow.

What ranges will you mostly be shooting at? Shooting for teeny groups or larger?

Those are what I use to decide; on my hunting rigs I run variables from 2-7 through 3-10X, my LTR right now has a 3-18X, my .22 has a 5-15, and the AR has a 4X.

If you're shooting clay bird or larger type targets, out to 300ish, a 2 or 3X would work, but only if it allows both eyes open for CQB type shooting, a la ACOG etc.

That's my 2 bits anyway.

FWIW, I think the ACOG with the Docter is the answer for total versatility, but it'll cost ya!

What's the damage on the Short Dot in Canada these days? What about the IOR Valda? i.e., How many organs do I have to sell?:) Who's stocking them?

I had a look on Valdada.com and the sweet tactical scopes there run $795 to $1695 and the 1.1-4x26 CRT illuminated Tactical Scope, CQB reticle is $995.00. I am not sure if that works out to one kidney and part of a liver.

Disclaimer: "The above statement in no way condones the selling of body parts or organs for fun or profit" ;)

kevinB pretty much nailed it, the Elcan is crap in what ever gen it is,case in point only 3 of my guys trusted it in A'stan (38 man Platoon) the rest ran their EO-Techs (some with magnifiers), ACOG or iron sights. The ACOG is the perverbial cat's rectum when it comes to a combination of short and long range performance, but I have yet to try out an S&B Short Dot. I hit bad guys from near muzzle contact range to 400m-450m with the ACOG even after it fell 20 feet down a mountain (with me attached :) ).
The IOR series has had good press but once again I have yet to try one out, just whatever you do stay away from the el cheapo Hakko and other pieces of Chinese made airsoft knock off crap.

Yeah ive been really impressed with the quality of the IOR glass. The only negative is that after long usage the lighted cqb recticle is maybe only about 80% as bright. Which is still really bright. Its adjustable to. I have used it outdoors in bright sun with no wash out. The IOR is heavy...

USP, how is yours mounted? I'm putting one on a Rem 7615, and I'm trying to decide on mounts.
