Hi,

I'm thinking of a 3x red dot mounted forward on a magpul picatiny rail on a takedown 10/22 . Most magnified red dot i see are about 3.5in eye relief.

Does anybody here have ever tried a magnified red dot mounted forward? or does anyone know a model that would suit scout mounting or handgun shooting?

TY

The short answer is you can’t do what you have in mind. Magnified red dots are prismatic designs, which inherently have very short eye relief. You get the advantage of an etched reticle so if the battery goes or it’s not on, you still have a reticle. But the limited eye relief means you are strictly mounting it on the receiver.

A red dot that’s either reflex or holographic in design has unlimited eye relief — so perfect for a scout mount — but they are not magnified and would require a bulky external magnifier like a flip-to-side.

There is one option / solution that didn’t occur to me earlier: the Vortex Sparc with 2X screw-in magnifier.

It’s a run of the mill reflex red dot with 1x magnification — so unlimited eye relief — but it has a threaded eyepiece that accepts a 2X magnifier which screws into the eyepiece.

It’s essentially the same setup as a reflex sight with a flip-to-side magnifier, but without the bulk and without the need for the extra rail space. So the entire unit would fit onto the short Magpul X-22 barrel-mounted optics rail.

Here are pics showing the Sparc with and without the 2X magnifier screwed in.
