Magnum and Standard primers

Hey guys,

Recently I was given some CCI large pistol magnum primers. Can these be used safely in place of regular large pistol primers?

Im currently using 4.5gr of Bullseye with a 230gr bullet with LP primers for my .45ACP - Can I use the same recipe with magnum primers or no?

I've actually put magnum rifle primers in my 44 mag revolver loads before. I couldn't tell the difference. You should be good to go.

Make sure your loads are reduced (if at max) and work back up

I've used both types and noticed no difference. Some of my 70's-80's vintage Winchesters say Large for Magnum and Standard Pistol loads.

Timbertec has the right idea. They will work fine but can increase pressures a little so just go a little easy on hot loads and work back up.

I've used lots when working through some primer shortages and not able to get regular primers.

a lot of the guys at the range use magnum primers in everything they load.

I'd loaded 308's with standard winchester primers that showed a slight delay of ignition of the powder. I switched to federal magnum and that went away, it's noticable on a pressure trace but otherwise I wouldn't have known the difference between the loads. Possibly if I'd uniformed the flash hole it would have had the same effect. I'm sure the hardcore bench rest crowd would be able to notice though.

I've used Large Pistol Magnum primers in my 45 LC loads. I was using 5 grns. of Red Dot and a 200 grn. lead cast bullet. A medium load at best. I didn't notice any difference at all. I do use Magnum primers in all of my rifle loads, large or small. Something I started years ago using ball powder and never bothered to change my formula.
