Hey GGN'rs,
Just curious, is the AFG a gimmic or functional? Anyone have a review posted or can shed some insight it would help! I've had a few ar's but have never run a vertical grip or an afg and I'm looking at one or the other for my next setup. I'm just not sure which direction to go.

Thanks,
Mike

I've used a lot of Vert grips. Tango Down, KAC, Cadex, etc. I found that since my grip shifted into a "thumb up", or 45 degree sort of on its own, that the AFG might work for me.

I've been using it for a year or so, now. And it works for me. They aren't really expensive. I'd say grab one, and try it out.

Its not for everyone. The difference between magpul afg and the pts version is a gimmick in my opinion. For a non load bearing part and both being plastic I don't see a difference.

Keep an eye out for a cheap one on the EE, they surface from time to time but don't last long at the right price. If you don't like it you'll be able to sell it and get your money back.

For me I found it gimmicky, I can grip the rifle with a C grip without an additional piece of plastic ;). YMMV.

Try it out.

I tried it, I didn't like it. I also had stubby VFG and I ditched that too. But it does come down to personal preference. I prefer hand stops. Do you feel you're lacking control without such devices?

Maybe see if there's any fellow local CGNer with one or both that will let you finger bang them for a bit?

Thanks guys.

It's not a lack of control that I have without it but it seems like everyone and their mother is running an afg or vert grip.. Wanted to see what all the hipe was about. I guess I can just use a vert grip and modify my hold so it's similar to an afg.. Either way I'll have to play around with the options and send some ammo down range!

I've tried various types of grip and grips on AR's and have found that I prefer the vertical foregrip. I thought that the AFG might be a good idea, but it somehow detached me from the feel of the front of the rifle. There's no doubt that it would be a very functional grip for someone with large hands......with smaller hands, not so much.
Being "old army" (FN FAL) I will still use a traditional, no gizmo grip on a rifle for any kind of static shooting, but for 'action' shooting, a vertical foregrip with thumb-forward is the way to go. (imho)

Thats kinda the way I was leaning. I have small-ish hands so a stubby vert grip with thumb forward along the bore might be the best of both worlds for me.

I have quite a few AR's and here is what I have found works well for me.

I have average to small hands, and I really like the AFG's on my short barreled/ light weight rifles.

I also don't mind them on my .308 calibre AR, as it is primarily used with a bipod.

I use the vert grips with all of my rifles with long barrels or excessive weight, as the AFG tends to torque my wrist with the muzzle heavy rifles.

But I wouldn't call them a gimmick product, as they work well for some individuals.

I'm using mine on an XCR, it is a fairly heavy rifle. I find that it is front heavy with the 18.5" barrel plus flash hider, and the AFG just makes it feel lighter at the front somehow. I found with vertical grips that it felt like they rotated in my hand, but not with the AFG.

They're okay. For some reason I prefer them on the VZs to ARs. I guess the VZ forend is a little smaller, and the AFG bulks it up a little.

The main thing I prefer about VFGs is that I find it easier to press them against cover for a stable shooting platform. But having something up front to locate your hand is kind of nice.

They're trendy for stupid reasons but that doesn't mean they don't have any utility.

I think it comes down to preference. I put one on my CZ858 and like it. If you have moved to this newer style of holding the rifle (usually starts shortly after drinking the magpul kool aid) it is comfortable.

I switched from vertical grips to the AFG a while ago and never looked back. I use them pretty far ahead on my rail and use a thumb forward grip with my thumb resting on the top of the rail. Feels very natural (for me at least) if the grip is in the right position, i.e. far enough forward. Too close and it feels awkward.

I find that I fatigue way less quickly and hence am steadier when running the AFG. Broomhandling a vertical grip is asking to get the shakes. If anything I'd use one as a hand stop.

Ergonomics are a very personal thing and you probably won't really know if it's for you unless you just try one and put it where it ought to be for your arms.

Try as many of them at the clubs as you can. I'm certain many shooters will be happy to let you try their rig/setup. I know there are many top shooters with both vertical grips, stubby grips, and AFG's who like variations of these units, and they win with what works for them.

I too have to try an AFG one of these matches! Get out and shoot lots, train lots, improve your game!

Cheers,
Barney
