Magpul CTR, any way to actually make it work as advertised?

Awwwwwwwwwwww yeah! Who da man!!

[this helped my stock, try and your own risk]

The problem is fitment between the lever and stock. Basically the stock portion of plastic interferes just enough to cause the lever to pop back ever so slightly after sqeezing it tight.

I have the mil-spec version and a mil-spec tube. It didn't bother me too much because the side to side wobble was eliminated, but, it still moved forward and back (which did bug me). Anyway, feeling inspired from this post I've solved the issue.

I just tested it, and it's fixed.

Details of fix below:

1.Drift out the roll pin (from left side to right side); install is reverse.

2. Remove lever. File down the entire area; you can actually see where it interfers. You want this area flat.

3. When done. Re-assemble.

Done!

G37, that's awesome. Can you highlight exactly which area I need to work on?

Edit: Got it. Just had to look closer.

That fixed it, eh? I'm thinking the position of the tit that rides over the fixed latch on the stock body might be the problem. It might be out of place, thereby not latching the lever high enough.

I don't think that's a fair comment. I'm quite happy with the other Magpul products I own.

It's not that big of a deal when a mass-produced plastic part doesn't come out to spec. It's just a PITA for me.

Who's being fair. I'm drinking and listening to country music and trolling CGN.

Magpul is good ish in my books. I was just being blasphemous. :D

It helped it, yes. I also saw that "tit" as well... initially I was going to pry it out as I suspect it's a press fit, but then decided against it (I didn't want to junk my CTR tonight).

I also realized that even if I could get it out, there's not much that could be done to reposition it.

What I did changes very little to the stock (just removing the flashing). It did help the squeezed-position compared to before.

Right. But what I'm not getting is how that can make any difference when it's these two highlighted parts that control how tight the lever will close. It's still going to relax so the two parts are touching.

Edit: So you're saying it really didn't help the stock tightness, just made the lever close a bit farther?

The plastic I removed was adding resistance to the lever pushing it "open" after having squeezed it closed. It now stays more "closed" after squeezing if that makes sense.

In fact, after you drift out the roll pin, you can see that when you close the lever all the way (no roll pin in place), the holes for the roll-pin are offset. This told me that there was a fitment issue somewhere.

If you could move the "tit", if there is still interference on the lever, it's going to put more pressure on the latch and probably cause some premature wear and you'd be back to square 1.

What is causing the lever to not stay in place? It could be improperly placed "hump," or plastic touching the metal portion of the lever (as in my case)... it could be a combination of both.

Anyway, that's the CTR lever disassembled. I chose to do the least amount of modifying as possible, through past experiences I've found this route to be the best one to take ;)

I'm picking up what you're putting down.

I shoulda just bought a MOE. Then I wouldn't have expected it to do anything special but it would still have added the Magpul flavoured kool-aid to my rifle. ;)

I gotta admit, having had both the MOE is about as good as the CTR, maybe a little more wiggle but mine was actually pretty tight.

I'm quite underwhelmed by this stock. Is there any way to make it work like I expected it to, or is the hype better than the product?

That what you get for drinking the Kool-Aid Stevo.:D

And I really hope this stock is for a red rifle! WTF are you doing slumin over here in Black rifles???f:P:

I've been super happy with both my MOE and CTR commercial tubes (Armalite and Bushmaster). At least with Magpul kit, there are very few surprises. :D

Glad it all worked out! Thanks for sharing!

Barney

Unlike mil-spec receiver extentions, commercial ones don't have a standard measure, they can all vary form one brand to another.

If I ever get an AR-15 with a commercial RE, I will promptly change it for a mil-spec one, which is stronger, has more stock options, it's just better.

Magpul make quality products.

Nothing "worked out", Barney. It's still unsatisfactory.

For those who keep beating on the "tolerances of commercial tubes" angle, I'll point out again that both of my tubes are within the tolerances on the Magpul dimensional chart.

It doesn't work for the dimensions they acknowledge.

Of course, Magpul does have a large disclaimer on their site about how this stock may not work as advertised on any tube you put it on.

Awww man, that's enough to drive you to drink! Sorry to misunderstand!

Here's hoping!! :D

Well hell, I thought you would have it fixed by now.
Is there anyone in your area with another one to try and see what may be different in the stock?

Nope. I'll bet there isn't another CTR within 2 hours drive of me.

I've sanded it, I've shimmed it, it's still the same.

Lesson learned, read all the info, including the small print. At least it looks nice.
