I am bringing up an older post, has anyone cut down a Magpul forend to fit an 8.5" 870?

I cut down a Hogue stock and got it to work but I am not sure about the Magpul one. Has anyone tried this?

Old post below...

I am adding a Hogue short lop stock set to my 8.5" 870 shotgun, the stock was easy to add obviously.

What I am wondering is if anyone has been at to modify the Hogue forend to fit the 8.5" 870. I know it'll take some cutting and fitting so my concern is will the Hogue non slip layer peel off if I start cutting and grinding?

Alternatively has anyone modified a Magpul forend to fit?

Thanks

I've been trying to find the posts by a guy that modified a Surefire forend to fit his 8.5" Grizzly but I can't for the life of me find it. IIRC he dremelled out either end to sink the lock nut deeper to fit the shorter slide tube. The forend overlapped the receiver like your Fabarm does and he mentioned having to keep his fingers out of the way to not interfere with ejection. I know the hogue rubber is bonded very well to the plastic underneath, some guys cut down their hogue stocks with no issues.

I modified a laminate stock to fit on a 8.5" of a buddies and it took a fair bit of sanding to get it to fit.

G.Mitchell, can you post some pictures of your modified hougue on the 8.5"er?

Can't help you with the magpul but seeing as you've done it once you could probably do it again with a different foreend.....

Sure, what sort of pictures would you like to see?

Here is one I took last year.

Nice work!
Can you sand and de burr the cuts easily without tearing the overmold?

I used a hacksaw to cut the material, the overmold can be worked with files and sandpaper as well from my experience. I used my 2x72" grinder with a cork belt to clean things up.

The hardest part was working the inside of the Hogue forend. Also working the area between the mag tube and the barrel.

I don't have a lot of tools I relied mostly on trial and error and luck. lol

i have cut down a Remington for end to fit a 8.5 dlask and at the time i was working in a machine shop. i had it in a milling machine but hand tools would get the job done . make sure to secure the piece in a vice if you go to using power tools .
