Magpul furniture vs AR style stock adapter

I recently bought 870 DM and it's my first real experience with the Magpul. I think I may have used one once before. I've got lots of time with a regular stock and a M4 collapsible stock.

I think I'm warning up to the Magpul

I have used OEM stocks on my Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 series shotguns, in addition to a few ATI pistol grip stocks, AR style stocks and Hogue. I initially resisted Magpul furniture, but decided to try a set on one of my Mossbergs. The ease of adjusting the stock length and available cheek risers immediately appealed to me. The front grip made mounting lights easy, and the shape provided good fore and aft stop points. I have since converted one 500 and one 870 to the Magpul furniture. It also makes my shotgun a back-up paddle for the canoe:)

I ran SGA stocks on a few 870s over the years. I like them but after putting a Mesa LEO adapter on my 14” 870 I sold the SGA. For me it’s a body mechanics thing. The SGA was good but the AR stock setup was better.

My SGA stock weighed almost exactly what my AR stock setup weighs so weight is a toss up.

A big plus is how well the shotgun carries on a sling. I run a Magpul barrel clamp front sling mount and a VTAC sling. With the SGA the shotgun still flopped and flipped while carried slung on my back. With the AR stock setup and the sling mounted on my CTR stock I get no rolling or flipping when slung on my back.

For me the benefits of the AR stock setup exceed any benefits of the SGA.

If you need a really short shotgun, due to terrain considerations, nothing beats an AR collapsible stock. You can (legally) put an AR collapsing stock on an 8 1/2 inch SG and come out just over the minimum overall required by law. The CTR also has a riser available, and there's also a Limbsaver available for it. If you need a tool that's short and powerful, that's it. If you want something to shoot, get a Magpul - they're ugly, but they work.

The limbsaver pad for the M4 butt stock is awesome, it makes 3” slugs feel like 2 3/4” bird or buckshot.

I recently picked up another pistol grip equipped shotgun to try after getting rid of all the previous ones I've had, but haven't shot it yet.

Some AR style stocks are heavy and some have a cheap look. My non-gun friends like the AR style for the taticool look, but they seem a little goofy looking to me.

What I like about a Magpul stock is that you can carry the gun in hand more ways comfortably, if the need arises like in a semi-ready position. I’m not taking about in a sling or how it carries on your shoulder, but how you can carry the gun comfortably by the magpul grip while carrying the gun in one hand ... doing this with an AR style stock is unbalanced and feels heavy. While you can do this with a traditional stock, magpul has the advantage of shortened length of pull, if you so desire. Also, I find AR stocks sometimes rattle a bit.

I’ve heard someone claim that an AR style stock is better for recoil, if you have say a shoulder injury ... I’ve never noticed the difference.

The magpul stock takes less room than an AR style grip in a case and an AR grip can snag on clothing or whatever.

But it’s been a while since I’ve handled an AR style stock.

The magpul looks goofy, but it grows on you lol.
