So I had picked up a Remington 700 SPS DM for about $475 awhile back as a project. While figuring out what to do with it a Magpul hunter stock and bottom metal and magazine was posted in the EE for a good price and that made up my mind.

So here is the rifle before:

The stock looks as simple as can be. For the price it's hard to beat. For about $350 give or take (depending on where you order from) it beats out the cost of most rifles stocks. I was worried before the stock arrived that it was going to feel really cheap. And it sort of does I will admit, it feels just like a cheap plastic stock at first.

Installing the stock is really easy. You don't need to do anything but bolt the receiver in and you're good to go. It accepts standard floor plates if you want an internal magazine or you can buy the optional bottom metal and magazine kit for about an extra $100.

Now I do have one gripe and it's with the bottom metal and magazine. The mag is annoying to seat. You really have to give it a good slap to get it to lock into place. They may work itself out with time and use but loading a mag while in prone can be annoying sometimes. At the same time the magazine does not drop free, you have to pull the magazine out. Not a real problem but can sometimes be an annoyance.

I have been asked by a couple people about mounting a bipod onto the stock. There are two options.

The two open slots allow you to use the Magpul M-LOK Bipod Mount. Simple to use but costs an extra $30 or so.

The other option is simply drilling the stock and using a standard sling swivel screw. The two indents on the bottom are there for drilling reference points. This is what I did to help keep the costs down.

The rear stock has spacers to change the length of pull. The butt pad screws are easy to get to which are nice. Also the cheek riser can be swapped out to different sizes (you have to buy the different sizes).

I haven't had a chance to take it out and shoot it yet due to the weather. It does feel good in the hands though to hold. If anyone has any questions about the stock I'll be happy to answer them.

Here is the rifle after:

You are pleased with the ergonomics of the stock? I've never handled one.

Its a hard plastic but overall it fits well and anyone who handles it seems to think the fit to them is good. It fits well shooting off hand, shooting off a bench, or prone.

It's a rigid stock as well and you don't have to worry about the barrel touching.

The cheek riser that comes with the stock might be a little on the high side, I really have to get down there. I only have medium rings though. Just another thing to be aware of.

I just bought one as well but have not had a chance to shoot with it. They are very adjustable and have 13-15 inch LOP shims and come with a .25 cheek shim, as stated above for some people using low or medium rings the lower cheek rest may be required.

I am going to try shooting it and then bedding it to see if there are any accuracy differences.

For the money and what I have seen so far I think they are a good option.

I'm in the building process.....Light weight hunting rifle
Purchased a Remington 700 XCR II / 300 win mag from ...EE.
Magpul Hunter 700 LA in FDE, its now at Black Box Customs going for a new paint job 40 % off...." Kryptek Highlander ".

On order, Magpul LA magwell magazine conversion kit.

I have one for my AAC-SSD.

I love it. Best bang for your buck if you want DBM with obtainable mags that don't cost a ridiculous price (as far as that goes in Canada anyway).

Never had issue seating the mags. I don't think they were made to drop free. The release lends itself very well to a grab and pull, which is appropriate for this rifle (imho).
AI pattern mags work well too, except Ruger Polymer ones (that I have tried).

Get a hold of a torque wrench/screwdriver if you can, to get those bolts just right.

Nice grouping. Was going to take mine out this week but I've been in bed with the flu for almost a week now.

Before I gt sick I picked up one of these covers for mine. Simple solution for now.

I've been considering one of these or a B&C Varmint/Target stock from Prophet River. They are both in the same price range, with the B&C only a few dollars more than the Magpul. The detach-mag option on the Magpul doesn't matter to me; I don't want or need that configuration. I have a couple of B&C stocks on other guns and think they offer good value for money, but I've never handled or seen the Magpul. Other Magpul items I have played with (AR-type stocks) have struck me as toy-like plastic crap...so you can see which way I am leaning on this choice. :)

Any chance that someone here might have an opinion on one vs. the other?

I have used the magpul, I just orded a B&C

The only real downfall of the magpul I could find was that I had to remove the rear screw, take off shoulder pads then take off the cheek riser to get my bolt out...

I was using the highest cheek riser available as I like them high.

Sorry for the bump but just an FYI to any prospective buyers.

On a Long Action Magnum such as mine you cannot take the bolt out without first removing the cheek piece. This in my opinion is an extreme oversight by magpul. Every time I chamber a round out of the mag clack it hits the cheek riser. Its rediculous. I phoned them and they said that its not an oversight but thats the way it is for length of pull. They could have at least made a small scoop at the front of the cheek piece so the bolt doesnt hit it. Plus thats what the butt pieces are for. You can of course order the unobtanium low riser but now your cheek is lower and with a 20moa mount and a NightForce NXS scope on low rings its not high enough for me personally.

Pretty pissed off about that personally.

Another opinion is the 300wm mag kits are not long enough for those of us reloading target rounds in the 208amax and longer area. If you like to seat your magnums just off the lands youll have to invest in the unobtanium and EXPENSIVE metal AICS mags as the magpul ones are likely made for factory ammo with not much extra room for big grain bullets.

So thats two anger points for me.

Otherwise its a decent setup. The price is right for sure but I think I will invest in something else.

I'm with you that a little indent in the front of the cheek riser for the longer bolt would have done the job.

As for magazines, mine insert super smoothly and drop free. Use them a lot and they'll start dropping free too.
