So the postman arrived this morning (I'm as shocked as you are, believe me!) with my latest batch of kool-aid: Magpul's new Maglink PMAG coupler! While there are some aftermarket couplers, they're noticeably heavier and bulkier. In addition to being incredibly light (80g!), these are so intuitive to install that even a caveman could do it... (so I didn't include disassembled pictures).

They clamp together extremely well and have a minimal, snag-free profile. They also extend the ribbing found on the PMAGs, and being of the same polymer - there's a continuous familiar textured gripping surface. Very sweet. My only minor gripe is that I wish Magpul would stop cheaping out with the flathead bolts on their kit and start using versions with allen heads, but I digress. On to the pictures!

Note: These are not compatible with the first generation PMAG 30, PMAG 20, EMAG, PMAG 30G or PMAG 20LR. Sorry guys... :(

You won't be 'palming' the bolt release on the first magazine, that's for certain. :evil: You can still release it with your thumb or finger, but the BAD will certainly make life infinitely easier (at least on an AR). On a Tavor, ACR, XCR-L (etc.) it probably won't interfere at all...

Nope. As indicated above, it's a no-go on the first generation PMAG 30, PMAG 20, EMAG, PMAG 30G and PMAG 20LR (.308). You need to stagger the magazines - otherwise you'll block the ejection port. The problem with the first generation PMAG is that the "ribs" are smaller, so they won't fit with the coupler, and the PMAG 20 is just too short - so you can't stagger them. There are no "ribs" at all on the EMAG for the couplers to lock into place with, and the PMAG 20LR is just too wide/large to fit the couplers. I've never seen a PMAG 30G, so I'll just take their word for it. ;)

In theory... you could probably get these to work with the EMAG - you'd just have to hand-tighten them to the point where they didn't move (the "ribs" lock into grooves in the couplers, so they've very, very solid.
 
How does one tell the first generation mags from the second (i.e. part number - molding code - etc...

Oh yes, it will... :evil:
You have to move the coupler down one rib to clear the mag well on the Tavor. Also note that you don't have to stagger the magazines, because even run in parallel - there's still enough clearance with the ejection port (I left mine staggered though, so I could use them in either my ARs or the Tavor).

Damn... I just preordered a bunch from Questar today thinking I had gotten on the bandwagon early, but apparently I was wrong!

Do you think with the coupler on the mags will fit in a stacked mag pouch, or am I having a pipe dream? Looks like it will work...

I know that most folks only use these with one set of mags on the gun for a quick first reload, but in our league most guys don't have 10-rounders, so our "limited" division with 5 round mags only is what's popular, so that's where I'm competing. Given those restrictions, being able to have a bunch of 5-rounders coupled and in pouches on my rig would be an advantage. For matches at other clubs I'll stick with my LAR mags coupled end to end.

Some of us live for the kool-aid... ;)

I think we all share the same pipe dream, unfortunately. From what I've read (and not personally tested), PMAGs are too wide when coupled. But the Maglink is fairly slim, so together you're looking at a width of 6cm plus add 5cm to your standard PMAG length (when coupled together staggered).

Reloading times with these are going to be very quick, though. And what's really nice is that these are great for non-ARs where you can't run the Redi mag (ACR, Tavor, XCR-L, etc.)

I'm hoping that with something like two ITW Fast Mag's stacked, or say an SOE Tactical AK/M4 Stacked Mag Pouch, that the offset will be enough that it would work with these. Hard to really predict until I have product in hand though.

If not then I may look at custom building something.

This much is true. The main consideration is that it's wider because the coupler has to allow enough space between the magazines for the mag well, so it really comes down to how much depth you have to work with. This whole thing would be moot if we could get rid of this goofy magazine restriction limit... (60-rounders, here we come!)
 
I wonder if, for competition purposes, a regular single mag pouch is enough. I.e., one of the pair of mags is in the pouch, and the other is just held suspended in the air in front of the pouch by virtue of the coupler. Will it stay put?

Generally in competition you're not crawling around in the dirt, so leaving the feed lips of the 2nd mag exposed are less of a concern than it would be in "real world" applications.

Well... if you mounted the coupler as low as possible (3rd-4th "ribs"), and inserted it into the pouch upside down - that could work. I couldn't say how practical this might be or whether it would reliably stay put...

Yeah that's what I'm saying.

I guess in 6-12 weeks when mine arrive from Questar I'll try it and see.
