Sample a few loaded mags and some worse than others. Pmag and 5/30 IMI need a good whack

Steel 5/30 probably need a hammer and can't really get 10 Rd IMI pistol mags to seat

I know a little resistance is normal but with the steel ones they don't like seating into place even when empty and no bolt.

I assume I'll do not harm whacking them into place but I want to ask those with experience. Pmag seem best maybe just sell the rest and buy a bunch more of those

It's the pinning of the mags I'm guessing. I minus a round and they all work better except the 5/30 ones I got from dlask. They still don't like it

You want the magazines blocked at 5 1/2 rounds, not 5. Then the top round has room to be pushed downward slightly as the magazine is seated. Easy enough to remedy.

Yeah I figured it was the pins but the steel ones don't want to seat even empty. Are Pmag usually pinned at 5?they offer very little resistance. Best of the lot but my steel ones are bad

Are the rivet heads on the steel magazines projecting? Empty AR magazines should seat easily, and drop clear.

The steel mags are pinned on front instead of back and the rivet head protrudes maybe a mill or 2. Definitely not smooth. The head is not filed flat

I have some atrs 10 Rd as well that seat fine but don't drop free but I think that's an issue the file can fix.

Maybe this is too. Would that rivet protruding be the culprit

Drives me nuts when the mags come punned at exactly 5rnds. The easy fix is to remove the rivet, cut a small bit off the leg on the rivet side, reassemble and test. Only remove a small amount at a time, like 1/8".

Replace the rivet and file it down a bit to almost flat. File too much off and you will end up removing the rivet.

If you cut too much, you'll end up with a prohib 6rnd mag. If that happens, you could rivet the other side of the mag.

Not following this. I know my way around a rivet due to work but you say remove it? Wouldn't this be drilling it out? That's all good just being clear. And you say remove a bit of the leg on the rivet side you mean the leg of the follower? Then with a slightly shorter follower I'll get that half a round space with a new rivet in the same hole?

Trim the leg of the follower slightly, so that it can travel a bit further before hitting the rivet.

With respect to the protruding rivet of the front of the magazine - replace them with countersunk flathead rivets.

I typed that out on my iphone which was hard to proof read :p

Yes, remove the original rivet and cut a small piece off the follower's leg on the rivet side. Reassemble the mag and temporarily stick a rivet in the original hole then see if you can load 5.5rnds.

Another related question. I understand that with rounds in the mags there is not enough room to seat the mag. I get that and am going to fix the mags I have with the above advice.

However, with the steel 5/30 I have they don't even want to snap in empty/no rounds in them. They do have rivet on front and it is protruding a bit. I get the rounds in no more room issue but what about these empty ones? Tried with bolt out same issue. They need a good whack you can't just click then in like all the others when empty. Any thoughts

If the rivet is too high, it might be causing the mag to bind in the magwell? Can you rock your mag around or insert it with the bolt open? You can remove the rivet and see if that's what is causing it to bind.
