Major issue with SVT — Resolved!

Last week while shooting with some friends my SVT when it had a failure to eject on the second or third round (fired that day; in total I think I've put less than 50 rounds through it since I bought it). No big deal, the gas system kind of wiggles around and sometimes the bolt doesn't cycle all the way. I went to mortar the rifle to get the round out, and noticed that the bolt was actually open, but not to full lock or anything. Anyway, I have no idea what happened and would appreciate some help.

Aside from trying to pry it up with a screw driver, would there be another way to get it back? I can't get it to budge at all.

Have you tried to push the rear cover foward so can be removed from the receiver? If you do so, just be careful, the spring might fly off. If you can get the cover out, will be more easy to put the spring back correctly. Your spring is bindingin the cover, may take some force to push the cover foward to take it apart.

You can't move the bolt cover or carrier at all?
You should be able to move that recoil spring around with your fingers?

Which is actually stuck here? if it's the bolt cover I suspect it has become bound or jammed in it's rails (have you broken down the rifle recently?)

In a real life situation...the rifle is DOA on the Russian Front...wonder if Ivan used it as a Club as Fritz and Helmut approached?

Okay, it seemed like the dust cover was jammed up on the BCG. I tapped it back with a hammer and punch and it went free and the bolt returned home, but the dust cover felt wonky. Stripped it aaaannnnddd... this lol

That's not supposed to be compressed like that, is it?

no.... that center piece between the springs is hollow - looks like it has jammed inside the rear piece - I think both springs are supposed to be the same length... in this state both should be the fully uncompressed... get those 2 pieces apart and check for damage.

Does not look like it will be good..

[what is your gas setting at?]

Nope, something wrong with the spring guide. Try to take it appart. Btw, reduce the size of your pics:)

Holy crap, it's hard enough compressing the spring to assembly the bolt... how does that happen?

Best I can say is try to decompress the spring and then reassemble. In one of your pics, it seems the recoil spring fell out of the notch in the dustcover (probably due to this compression). That is probably why it wouldn't fully open.

Yeah. try to take it apart. Not right at all. be very carefull. Wear protective eyewear and watch your fingers. With work gloves on I got a black fingernail from Katinka's (my svts) spring.

clean out bolt spring guides shown in the pic once separated. Its either jammed, rusted or both.

Gas setting was at 1.7 by the looks of things. I've had issues with the gas setting shifting while firing, and 1.7 seems to be the only setting that will somewhat reliably cycle. I've only been shooting MFS 185grs through it.

Tapped the spring guide apart. Every thing looks good. Sorry about that, I uploaded them to Imgur not realizing that CGN doesn't have auto resize lol.

Yeah, looks like this is what happend. Not sure what would have caused that though. Since I got it I've (as stated above) had issues with the gas system staying put and thus, the gun cycling reliably. Am I doing something wrong lol?

Edit: thanks so much for the help so far by the way!

edit: Danny, it all came apart without any voilent action (which I was afraid of) It seemed like the spring guides were just simply stuck together from friction.

I would double check that middle spring guide and be sure the spring still moves along it freely. Seems to me that if the middle and rear guides were forced together one should be fluted a bit...

Also check the lengths of the springs, on mine one is longer than the other by about a centimeter... if yours ar different lengths, try the longer one between those 2 pieces.

I had this same problem SVT-40 set me straight in a thread I started about 2 weeks ago... the gas tube should be tightened right down against the manifold so that you can't move it.

It did, thanks again everyone!
I set it at 1.5, hopefully it'll cycle the MFS decently now. If not, any where I can buy military load (147-150 grain pills by the looks of things?) non-corrosive x54?
