So here is a question, particularly for those veterans in the field.

Which firearm and which chambering have you taken the majority
[highest %] of the big game you have shot with?

For "Big Game" let's not apply this to anything smaller than a wolf.

I'll get started.

For the firearm, easy....M700 Remington.

Chambering...the 30-06, with the 308 Norma Mag hard on it's heels.

[Like the two so much, I had a custom rifle in 308 Norma built on a 700
Magnum action.]

Regards, Dave.

Although I haven't been using it much in the last 15 years....without a doubt I've taken a high percentage of my Big Game animals with a Model 700 bdl in 8mm Remington Mag., shooting 220 grain Sierra boat tails.

Just by pure numbers I have to say 30-06 even though its far from my favorite cartridge. Culling is a special set of circumstances, and criteria that normally doesn't matter starts to become important. Things like ammo supply, ammo weight when flying, quieter report, ease of rapid fire, shorter typical ranges and the reduced tendency to burn yourself all make a difference that wouldn't matter in other circumstances.

Closer to home its the STW, or maybe various 50 Cal muzzleloaders.

For sheer numbers likely the .50 cal. 264WM and 7STW are likely neck and neck for 2nd with the 270WSM coming on fast!

I'm with the OP's second choice.
The almighty tree oh ate in Norma Mag.
The weepawn that dad used and blessed his little soul
blessed it for me as well.

For me the most animals has been with a 50 cal muzzle loader ( at least 80% of what I've shot) second are my 7mm's ( rem mag and a 7 08 ) last place is a .308 ( had one for two years)

However, my vote is the 303 because after the war everyone had one. Heck I even remember when you could buy one at Macleods Hardware for $15.

For myself, a model 70 (push feed) in 270 Winchester (douglas barrel), though it has been gone several years now. Second place would be a remington 700 in 300 win mag, my lucky moose gun plus at least one black bear and a few deer. I've used several other rifles, including a few more 270s and will hunt yet another 270 this year!
