Makasi MK-15 Problems / QC Concerns – Looking for Owner Feedback

Hey guys,

Looking for some feedback from other Makasi MK-15 owners before I decide whether to send mine in for warranty.

The rifle is basically brand new with only around 150 rounds through it. I was shooting Winchester 5.56 55gr/XM193-type ammunition.

I’ve noticed two issues so far:

  1. Pretty much every fired case has a small chunk/gouge taken out of the case head/rim around where the extractor is grabbing it. Some cases are worse than others. I’m also getting a noticeable amount of brass shavings/debris accumulating around the bolt/barrel extension area.
  2. During shooting, one of the gas block fasteners backed itself out. That obviously caught my attention considering how little the rifle has been fired.
The primers and the rest of the cases look normal to me, and the rifle is still very new, so I’m trying to figure out whether the brass damage could just be an aggressive/sharp extractor that may settle down during break-in, or whether this is something I should be treating as a warranty/QC issue right away.

I’ve looked closely at the extractor and there seems to be a fairly sharp/worn-looking edge where it engages the case. I haven’t modified or polished anything.

Has anyone else with a Makasi experienced:

  • Chunks/gouges being taken out of case rims?
  • Significant brass shavings around the bolt/barrel extension?
  • Extractor wear this early?
  • Gas block screws/fasteners backing out?
Would you guys put another range session through it and see whether the case damage improves, have a gunsmith inspect it, or just warranty it at this point?

I bought the rifle through IRUNGUNS, so I’m also curious if anyone has gone through the warranty process with them on a Makasi and what the experience was like.

I can post pictures of the extractor, brass buildup and fired cases as well.

Thanks — interested to hear what other owners are seeing.

Not an owner but I am under the impression that the gas block fastener is a known issue and that Brigade fixed it for their newer versions coming into Canada this fall.

The brass damage appears to be a new one as I haven’t heard that one before
Hopefully it’s an isolated issue and not a every rifle has this issue
I reload so damaged/gouged brass isn’t a good thing

It is a standard AR15 Bolt, so if you happen to have an AR15 handy, you have what you need to swap out the extractor and see if that resolves the issue. Otherwise, True North Arms ought to be able to sell you a spare AR15 Extractor if you need one.

As others have said, Loctite the Gas Block Screw. I'd use Red (permanent) if it were my rifle.

Does the rifle function? In the AR world, the amount of brass shaving is near or just over the top range of being "acceptable"

cam pin recess wear (normal campin wear tends to show up to the rear as cam pin rotates to unlock but in this case it is to the front, this means cam pin is banging into the recess in close position) and brass shaving, the first step will be to headspace it.

Head to a big gun shop with AR knowledge, ask them to check headspace using GO and NO GO. If it fails the headspace, back to the factory. The frontal cam pin recess wear is probably a clue of the "why".

Extractor is hardened steel - I don't see extractor damages I see brass marking

instead of XM193 or winchester 556, try some 223 or a different brand of 556, to rule out the particular 556 lot is not on the high side of the pressure. Higher pressure and some headspace bias may compound the issue.

It functions more or less. Took a few mags to work out the first malfunctions, and there was even more brass shavings before I cleaned it. I will go to the Calgary Shooting Center and have them check. Oh man was hopping it would not come to that...

Did anyone else notice the chamber? Why is the brass marking the chamber wall in some area's and not others (the brass will expand uniformly)?

Perhaps the fired round is sticking in a (in parts) tight chamber causing the extractor to rip into the rim a bit excessively?
