Make primer from Goex Pinnacle?

Gents,

Is is OK to crush the FFF Goex Pinnacle to fine powder and use it as a primer in the pan? Is the finer the better?

i wouldnt fool around trying to grind 3fffg buy some 4ffffg or use your 3fffg, i have used both and i cant see any difference, but i use 4ffffg if i have it,, wade

There is no ffffg from Goex Pinnacle and it seems than igniting the fffg is less reliable. So is there any negative effect of making a finer powder from the fffg?

I think the biggest advantage of 4F is if you dry ball; it is easier to get through the touch hole to shoot the ball out. Keep in mind that I would never dry ball but have met people who have :>) :>)

Like Wade I prime with the same powder as I use down the barrel; usually 3F

It seems that with my rifle I just bought a bunch of problems.

So does any of you use 3F Goex Pinnacle as a primer? (I've read that real black powder is more sensitive, but I'm not sure I can buy it here)

I think you will enjoy the flintlock part of it; there are a number of us here who shoot them often.

I believe Williams sells Goex black powder, not sure about 3f or 4f, better call them first.

Dryballin' is accidently ramming a ball down without a powder charge beneath it. You would not want to do it on purpose... lol.
You need real black powder for a flintlock.

ooohh.. I thought it is the process to mill in in a home-made ball mill.
So it seems I have to start my quest for real black powder if everybody says this.

I read an evaluation of Pinnacle by someone VERY knowledgeable in BP when the powder first came out, and the short answer is yes, maybe, if you really have to. Based on his experience, I'd say that if your firelock has an internally-coned touch-hole liner (so the powder is close to the flash) and a reasonably large touch-hole (at least 1/16"), then Pinnacle should ignite reasonably reliably, but likely with a slight hesitation compared to real gunpowder. If the touch-hole is of the traditional hole-drilled-into-barrel style, then you're likely to have more trouble. He did have reasonable success with grinding the powder down fine for priming, but it was still noticeably fussier and (IIRC) slower than real black.

If you can get even a limited amount of proper powder of any granulation, and your touch-hole is suitable for Pinnacle, then use the real stuff for priming. If you have a traditional touch-hole, then you might have to use duplex loads as one does with Pyrodex.

But your best bet is still to find the good stuff.
