So TEC sells all these cheap sxs and o/u shotguns. I want to make my own coachgun out of them.
Okay so how crazy is this idea and that said, what do I need to know?

Well, for starters realize that many of the guns they have in the SxS category are OLD! You have to be careful to avoid use heavy loads in them, especially the hammerguns. Then you'll need to know that when cutting a double it is very likely that the soldered rib that joins the two barrels may come apart. This is fixable with resoldering. Personally I would silver solder as much as possible but then the chances of solder bleeding to unwanted places is greater and you can't reblue over solder. Otherwise go nuts. The only real drawback is that you'll be butchering a nice old gun which in my books is taboo. Yes I've chopped a barrel (legally) but it was a rusty Winchester 2200 so no real loss to history!

Old, eh? What about the over unders. The Baikals can‘t be that old & over unders aren‘t soldered together, are they?

With a Baikal, just do it......... the top one here is a 12 ga Baikal that I bought 35 years ago as a duck gun - used to have F & M 28" barrels, before I chopped 'em off. The bottom one is an actual Stoeger Coachgun (20 ga.) just for comparison. :)

That 12 ga is an awesome grouse gun now. :D I've had no issues at all with the central rib or anything else. :)

That's correct. You can't chop below 18.5", nonres, res, or whatever action and calibre. It's considered an illegal alteration to the firearm. It's only legal if the barrel is manufactured that way a la HP9. As a precaution, I'm not going shorter than 19"

Its 18 not 18.5

18.5 is for semi-autos

According to the Criminal Code, a prohibited firearm is:

a handgun that
has a barrel equal to or less than 105 mm in length, or
is designed or adapted to discharge a 25 or 32 calibre cartridge, but does not include any such handgun that is prescribed, where the handgun is for use in international sporting competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union,
a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,
is less than 660 mm in length, or
is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm (18 inches) in length,
an automatic firearm, whether or not it has been altered to discharge only one projectile with one pressure of the trigger, or
any firearm that is prescribed to be a prohibited firearm

I've thought about cutting my SxS down but with threaded chokes it just feels like a waste of a good barrel! I'd rather find someone with some coach barrels to trade. My single shot 10 gauge was cut down as soon as I got it. There's just something about short barreled shotguns....
