Make your own CQB type stock for your M1A/M14 *see post 14

Finger(s) are comin along. My trigger finger, sadly will never be the same. Surgeon says maybe in a couple years of use. Can't bend tip at all and middle knuckle has about 40% movement and 10% strength.
Learning my trigger skills all over again with my middle finger.

Now that I've dispensed with the whining, the show begins tomorrow ;)

I hope you feel better and recover sooner... Man that's gotta suck!

Cheers,
Barney

Life goes on brother ;)
The m14s and my other semis are no problem with the middle finger on the trigger but I'm gonna have to make some custom stocks for my bolt guns so my index finger clears the bolt knobs LOL

Finished photos and write up for about 1/2 of this version of the DIY stock. Might start a new thread an just post it start to finish.

Now that i've got my M14 in the USGI stock you sent me (thanks for your patience), i've got a spare 'rinco stock. I'm ready to chop it tomorrow, definitely looking forward to the rest of this one!

Typing must be good physiotherapy right?

Actually, 90% of my CGN activity is done from my blackberry so I don't even use the fingers LOL

Been a little distracted this past week, that and all the pics I took with my phone for this thread... Well they suck ballllzzz so while all the write up and drawings ect are done, I gotta get a good camera. I'll do that over next few days.

This mod is quite a bit more complicated that the other recent DIY pistol grip stock guide so there are quite a few steps to take very clear pics of. I'll finish this up and then I'll be hunting and mostly offline till december ish.

-GOOP brand Marine Epoxy putty- 1 box(Rona usually has)

Is this what you mean?

www.homedepot.ca/product/amazing-goop-marine-1094-ml-37-oz/946582

Rona does not seem to have anything similar listed.

I've got the adapter, and extension tube on the way, stock is all cut down. Definitely getting excited about making this myself - even if it is more expensive than i expected.
These guys are still on my list - Fastenal has some hours that do not suit me at all!

-dremel 1/8th carbide reamer bit
drill bit and tap for 1/4 x 28 thread (for standard AR grip screw ) ( Fastenal)
- 1 , standard AR15 grip screw (1/4 x 28tpi, 1 inch long)
-drill bit and tap for 1/4 x 20 thread (Fastenal)
-GOOP brand Marine Epoxy putty- 1 box(Rona usually has)
-3 inch length of 3/8" x 1 1/4" aluminum flat bar
-5 pcs 1/4 x 20 x 5/8" button head allen screws (Fastenal)

Ya, this whole thing woulda been easier and faster if I hadn't sliced up my hand right after I started the thread LOL

And no, that's not the goop marine stuff I mean
It's in a box, and is a 2 part epoxy past
It's called amazing goop marine epoxy paste , not the squeeze tube sealant version like in your link.
Rona stores in BC carry it and Marine hardware stores should have it.BC home depot stores have all the other goop stuff but seemed to stop carrying the 2 part epoxy version.

There may be a substitute but after testing many products... This stuff has been the ticket.
I'll post a good pic of that stuff

Update from me, if the Doc doesn't have one for now.

Not sure if i should remove those two little nubs - with them the adapter doesn't site level with the forend of the stock as you can see below, but makes for a decent cheek weld with my optics. So i'm in two minds about that. Also the bridge between the action and the adapter measures over 6.5mm (now that i got a fancy vernier caliper for my birthday!) so i need to trim that a little with the files at work.

I've got a buddy who works at a machine shop who has promised to machine up the pistol grip adapter out of the 3"*1 1/8" alloy bar stock - i got two pieces as it was the same cost as getting one. Plus i was expecting to be doing it with a file and hacksaw, so fully expected to screw one up...

From the parts above, and the way this thing is going together, i feel like i'm just going to push on and figure my way through it. kind of like a jigsaw puzzle. I haven't got the Goop yet - for some reason that's proving not super easy to track down - i've not spent a lot of time looking for it, but definitely more than i expected. Rona doesn't stock it, at least not in the Tri-Cities as far as i can find. The two marine supply stores i've called have drawn a blank on the exact combo mentioned above too. And i'm still waiting on time to swing by Fastenal for the bolts and what not, but figured (correctly) that getting the adapter in place and the grip mount made would take some time.

Most of this has been happening in my lunch break at work - not a super gun parts friendly locale, but not unfriendly either. The stock bits and adapters are fairly innocuous looking which doesn't hurt, but it does keep progress slow.

Cost so far:

Stock - nothing it was a spare
Stormwerks Adapter - $50, free shipping to Canada (!)
A2 Grip and commercial buffer tube - $30 shipped
Magpul CTR comspec - $80 shipped
Alloy bar stock - $12 for two pieces - minimum charge at the metal supermarket!
Alloy 2" angle 3' long x2 - $60 at Rona

Don't know if anyone else is following this, but i managed to track down the marine epoxy paste as above. Can be ordered by any Marine Supply store that deals with Western Marine. PN 5300026. Store i ordered through didn't know what i was on about til i gave them the part number. Then it was smooth sailing...
Under $15.

Bit of a weird post, i guess that's what i get for doing it with my iphone.

****Disclaimer**** This post is only for your amusement, when this goes wrong at a later date and you can look back and laugh and point at my hubris. I am not doing this with any input or guidance from M14doc/45ACPking. This may go horribly wrong yet. Don't follow anything i do. It's probably wrong. I found the pistol grip info floating around the 'net, and while it seems right.... Who knows.****Disclaimer****

Anyway, update:

After a disaster waiting fruitlessly for my buddy to machine up the pistol grip adapter, i found a friends dad who is a tool and die maker who'd love to draw up a CAD file and make it for me from some scrap alu! After months of waiting, i was suddenly rushing towards having this get done. In the end it took about 2 hours to program his mill and knock out a couple of these.

Anyway, what you see above if the (almost) finished piece. I need to drill and tap a few holes - 2 for the bolts to the Stormwerkz adapter and one for the pistol grip itself. From there i'll need to drill and tap the Stormwerkz adapter to bolt it into the stock.

****Disclaimer**** Don't do any of this yourself expecting it to work. I'm fully expecting to f*** it up at some point. This may be entirely the wrong way to do it, and i may miss some vital but less than obvious step. I'm only going on guesswork and trying to figure out how to use everything listed in the first post. ****Disclaimer****

In the case i don't screw it up, i will have one spare pistol grip adapter that i'll ship out to the first person that can pm me a pic showing their cut stock, the stormwerz adapter and the other stuff needed to do this - lay it out in one big picture. And i'll ship you (at my expense) one (possibly wrong) pistol grip adapter. NB: This will only happen when and IF i have drilled and tapped my adapter successfully without f***ing it up. Hoping to get that done this week. I don't know if anyone else has been in the same boat as me, eagerly waiting, but if you are, then here's your chance to move forward.
