Maybe this should go in the gunsmithing forum, but who knows? I'll start here.

Has anyone made their own 1911 grips? Experiences, tips, warnings, pics all welcome.

Thanks,
Mark

There’s a thread on 1911 Forum, Grip Making How-To….Pics which has instructions for making grips with denim, canvas, etc and resin. Most of the photos are viewable but there are some nice results.

I've been tooling around the idea of trying to cut out some grips in some exotic woods using one of those hobby desktop CNC routers, just haven't gotten the courage to actually buy one. There are enough free models out there and I've tried doing simulations in fusion.

I'm a fan of having projects to make for oneself as a hobby but for simple things that are readily available, personally I wouldn't bother.

Basic 1911 wood slab panels are available in just about every variety of thickness, texture and wood type. Easy enough to make with even hand tools but super affordable to buy (relative to the material blank cost).

Resin panels may be more of personalised touch if creating one's own laminate design vice buying blank boards.

Target-type grips would be something that many would want to invest lots of time and effort to fit to one's hand and preferences, which would be worth the venture if one really wanted a moulded grip 1911, which would be a rare case on its own.
