I would like to try using my lathe to cut down the brass to almost the right length then use my lyman trimmer for the last few thou.
I would also have to trim the rim. I am trying to think of a way to do this consistently and not damage the brass in the chuck.
I did some by hand and it was a pain.

Being a pain is the price you pay for playing with stuff like that. Pricey stuff Stateside. $1.49US each.
If you have a collet chuck you should be ok though. Wouldn't bother with the Lyman trimmer if I had a lathe.
There's a guy on Castboolits who's cutting 'em with a chop saw then using a trimmer, so a lathe is king of elegant. snicker.

Insert a wooden rod or a bullet in the neck and wrap with paper; use the primer location for the pilot?

Turn a mandrel to fit the case neck. Grab the mandrel and case in the chuck. Mandrel keeps the case from collapsing. Feed in the tool to cut the case.
