i am in the process of designing my own aluminum bedding block
for a 700 vls in 308
i will be a full length block, and i will machine a pocket for it in my stock.

most of the diamentions are easy to do, but behind the trigger group it gets tricky, anyway, i was wondering if anyone knows where i could get my hads on a cad file or technical drawing of a 700 short action?

thanks allot

The 700 receiver is tubular. Make a V-block at least 8.75" long. Sit the receiver in the groove, make and drill the guard screws (which are 1/4 - 28 thread). The down pressure will pull evenly on the two bearing surfaces without worrying about nesting any two surfaces perfectly. Mill out clearances for the trigger. Then make a huge mill cut to bed the bedding block.

In essence this is the system Remington used on their 700 VSSF varmint series, except the bedding block was moulded into the Kevlar synthetic material.

I will 2nd the V Block. Cut the outside of the block with a roughing endmill so you have something for the bedding compond to adhere to.

i am getting the block cnc milled to match the 700 receiver, so it will be a perfect match, the trick is i want match the end geometry where the full width tube ends, and it "tapers" down to a smaller end at the back of the receiver.

i am drawing this up in solidworks at the moment, have bolt holes in, mag well, trigger group pockets done, just need rear shape, bolt clearence and i am done

It won't be a perfect match..

You can not machine a perfect fit to the action because the action is not perfect to start with...... get it close and skim bed it. Every bedding block should be bedded as far as I am concerned.

oh i will be glassing it with a skim, but it will be awfull damn close, way better than just in the wood stock as it is now

have not made up my mind yet on bedding yet, frankly do not know much about bedding compounds yet, please educate me
