Making a Galil clone from a Vz58?

Like many of us I was planning to make an AK clone out of one of mine... but then got to thinking that it could make a really cool Galil clone.

It would be a lot of work - moving and re-mounting the front sight, fabricating or modifying a Galil rear sight, rearranging the lower handguard mounting assembly, replacing the upper handguard with a tube, redoing the cocking handle... but certainly no more difficult than a lot of other projects I've seen on here!

Pic of what one 'could' look like with a bit of creativity (quick photoshop job - Klunk's real Galil above, my chop-job below with a restricted-length barrel center, and unrestricted barrel at bottom):

Looks like its possible... people on this board have converted sks/cz-858's into various AK47/Drangov clones so a galil doesn't seem so far out.
 
I love the galil, i love the VZ, im all for customization but why turn a great weapon into some sort of retarded love child of the two? Im not trying to hate don't take offense. but id use that money towards something like ammo or mags. Props to ya if you do do this and ill be interested to see what you do especially with the charging handle. But i like both how they are but that's me, and you know how opinions are. how bout you make a .308 VZ instead.

Absolutely agree, and if I could own a Galil, I would... but as I can't, and as I have several Cz/Vz's, I figured why not?? I hate bubba work, and would want to do it right... if I'm going to muck with one of my rifles, it had better turn out!! :redface:

ps got lots of ammo, and lots of mags ;)

Klunk, thanks for the pic, I used it to modify my photochop - yours is exactly what I'd like mine to turn out like :)

Any metal fabricating specialists want to chime in to help?

Wish i had multiple rifles and the tools to do that kind of work, like i said im interested in seeing how the charging handle turns out, out of all the mods ive seen charging handles interest me the most, i like the fal idea as well. But with your project the biggest problem is gonna be modifying the gas system to look/operate like a galil, good luck and as with all forums lots will be learned, hopefully not from mistakes:)
 
I think you should sell me one of your Vz 58L's...kidding....no not really :) Regardless, it certainly will look awesome when your done.

lol I'm no gunsmith... if I do a galil clone, I won't be modifying the gas system at all, aside from getting a front sight mounted on it and replacing the handguard with a tube. For me, the whole idea is to change the appearance of the gun, without f***ing up the mechanics of it :) I may or may not even do it, but if I do, I'll definitely be contracting out the work I need done (sights, a tube to replace the upper handguard, a bracket to accept the Galil forend, and the vertical piece on the bolt carrier) to 'qualified' people!

Edited to add - Klunk, do me a favor, send me your Galil so I can take a better look at it... I'll send it back as soon as I'm done :)
 
I might take you up on that, so I can figure out exactly how to put it together, assuming I can find the parts I need... I've got a WTB ad in the parts EE, so we'll see what turns up!
