A friend has an M1 carbine that he would like to put a longer barrel on and make non restricted. What's involved in swapping out the barrels? Is it simply drop in or is there other work involved?

Thanks!

You should use a receiver wrench and big vice. You use parallel bars on the flats of both the receiver and barrel in order to index. Headspace would likely be ok, but you should check it.

see a picture of the tools here: htt_p://vishooter.home.att.net/m1903/barrel_wrench.jpg

I made a very crude wrench out of a piece of 1/2 steel. Did the trick. Don't ask me why I took this picture :confused:

Please if its an orig GI carbine dont mess it up!! the cfc wont let you put the orig barrel back on ever!

tradex is out of barrels last i checked

Find a 19" barrel. Then you'll need a barrel vise and proper action wrench plus headspace guages and a big hammer. It's really a job for a smithy. Drop in it ain't.
Do not attempt it without the action wrench. You'll twist the receiver into an oddly shaped paperweight.
