First off , I apologize , I'm not that good at putting ideals in to words , so bare with me .
This whole thing is easier then you think , I recently picked up a Mossberg 500 with out a barrel off the EE and with it came a few goodies , like a ATI forend tool for taking off the castle nut with out removing the slide action and a Bantam wood forend with slide assy , this got me thinking about how fit a magpul forend , sure others have done it , and you've all seen the pictures , but , they've all look like it's too far forward and I wanted to still have room for a sling plate under the mag cap , so I used the Bamtam forend as a guide and how it fits over the receiver with the slide back , the rest was easy .

You'll need a 1 3/8" hole saw , a friend with a drill press , a dremel with a cut off wheel , a table vise and about 4 beer .
I also used a old Mossberg forend for practise .

Set the drill press table at 90° , place the magpul moe against it , use this as a guide and go slow , little at a time , keep checking the fit , do this slow , it's easier to take off Material then add , take some off , put it in the vise , go in from the back with the dremel cut off wheel to clean it up and relieve the sides for the action bar springs , repeat as needed .
And if you can , get a ATI forend tool , the plastic one that comes with the magpul is great , but I snapped the lugs off tightening mine down , the metal one won't break .

I think you're right , this way takes more time to do and would be easy to screw up , but I really wanted to use this sling plate under the mag cap , mostly because of where the light is at 6 O'clock .

I certainly agree with your thinking, I hate the magpul forend anyways but the fact that they use it to block the use of a sling plate really sucks. Gotta buy that magpul sling mount if you wanna have the koolaid on yer lips. But the koolaid don't fit a 14". What a time to be alive.

So far I have run in to one small issue doing it this way , the anti-rotation ring rides father back on the barrel , where the barrel is thicker , and will cause the slide to to stick some , so you can do one of 3 things .

1) leave the ring off , this will just make it like the factory slide is anyways , a little rattley .

2) relieve some of the mickey mouse ears on the ring.

3) let it wear down on it's own .

Aside from that , very happy with how this turned out .

And there is this link , this guy posted better pictures of his work , if it helps you decide to do this .
I was unsure about hot linking it , so just close the gaps between http
