Making a PVC tube case for a shorty shotgun?

I'm planning on making something similar to the Mossberg J.I.C. (Just in Case) tube out of PVC. I was thinking about putting a cap on the bottom, a threaded lid, and foam padding inside.

Anyone heard of/seen/have something similar?
 
The foam won't do any good except to attract and hold moisture. Put the gun in heavy grease. wrapped in greased paper and in a very well sealed plastic bag. Grease is good. Oil is not good. Contact to anything softer than the metal is not good.
 
Putting together something similar myself right now, using an open top 116 litre (i think) poly drum with a water/air tight seal on the lid that i got from work.

Personally i dont like PVC, shatters fairly easy, threaded caps can get damaged fast, no gurantee its going to be water/air tight, costs and weighs too damn much for what it is.

For the bottom i'd throw down a layer of good quality dessicant with a layer of absorbant cloth on top. Rubber would work for the sides but may add more weight than you want. Assuming you can get a good seal on it and have dessicant i dont see a problem with using foam.


If i was you i'd start looking around for a drum supply company and see what they've got in the way of poly drums, may end up being cheaper than PVC.
 
Lots of good suggestions from you all. I'm intending to keep it in there for short periods of time when we're hunting for a week. The rest of the time it will live in the safe.

A drum/pail/bucket is an interesting alternative. I'd like to find something that fits as snug as possible.

Funny... both the foamy and spray adhesive were in the plan. Thanks for the confirmation...

I suggest to buy the PVC and caps now, don't wait until later, say, like, in the fall, because they will be hard to find. I don't know if the federal elections have anything to do with this, but I have the feeling the PVC, caps, etc will be in short supply.

yeah its true, there is allways a shortage of raw PVC when an election is imminent, I think they use it for the signs.
 
Heard the local fuzz wanted the stores to record anyone buying PVC that seemed strange. This was a few years back around the time registration came in .
 
.....ya and coincidently grow op's use 4"-6" or bigger PVC for NFT and aeroponic's growing.... so may want to be carefull packing a 10' length into your house if your neibours are nosey :D
 
Ok... so I did some calling around... 8" PVC in $13 a foot (need 3'), the 8" Original Gripper is $50, plus the endcap, plus the bits and pieces.... This isn't a $25 Saturday project anymore. hmph....

I bought a Kolpin sealtector gun sleeve from wholesale sports last year for about $35.00 and it is 100% watterproof and has a "dry" bag type closing system.
I can slide in a rifle in a soft padded case so the rifle is protected and then the sealtector keeps it dry.
Even if you did want to bury something I think the sealtecto would do the job and by the souns of it cost less then a DIY tube.
