Making HP Bullets

It can be done, but it's not simple. The displaced metal has to go somewhere. If you don't use a lubed and properly dimentioned swaging die to support the bullets base and sides, you'll distort it. Even with such a set up, you'll be displacing metal against a hard copper skin which may stretch, but could also crack.

Probably the best method would be a 6 or 8 pointed star punch used on a flat pointed bullet.

Personally, unless you were doing thousands, I suspect you'd be better off just buying them.
 
You'll make a mess, trying to punch that much material out of the way of the punch.

Easier, and more effective, to set up a drilling jig that will hold the bullet and align and guide the drill bit, if you really feel the need to hollow point a cast slug. Drill a hole big enough to allow the displaced material room to move back into the hole, when the punch is driven in.

Make a few, then measure them and try them out. No use ruining all your bullets, only to find out after that they are not fit to shoot.

The next step up is a swaging die. More money than you want to spend, I'm betting. Got a lathe? You can make the stuff. Gotta be able to hold some pretty close tolerances.

I'll have access to a hydrolic swage setup in may again will talk to Marcel and try a few .

Last project was to take .355 plated Frontier 138gr and run them through a .401 swagging die to make cheap 138gr 40's they didn't crack the plating and actually shoot better than my 135 Noslers @ 25yds didn't try anything further yet.

I prefer to shoot HP bullets and always looking for something new to try
yes if it works will do lots to justify making the punch

some of the reloading tool manufacturers make a drill attachment for the lathe type case trimmers this would probably be your best bet
 
You can't drive 'em fast enough to make it worthwhile. Plated bullets are loaded with cast bullet data. They are not jacketed bullets.

makeing hollow points

I just buy hollow point bullets if I want to shoot hollow point bullets . and as for what sunray said as in you can't drive plated bullets very fast then why can I shoot them out of a 44mag Marlin with something like 24 grains of H110 and get great groups at 55 yards time and time again ???

I was on Rimfire Central and this guy swears by cutting the tips off his 22 long rifle bullets and then shooting - hunting with them . he had photos of what he had shot and they mad a hell of a mess of what he hit with them . :nest:

I'm thinking of making the HP bullets out of plated Bullets Not lead
I drive my 138gr plated 40 cal's at 1300+ fps same a s My 135 Nosler JHP's
so I think speed is not the issue.
The 135's cost me 170/1000 and the 138's around 90/1000 production costs around $.02 /rd so there would still be significant money saving if the process works
