I have a GSG 16 on pre-order. It'll be my first gun, I'm really excited about it. One question, do you think a Vortex Strikefire is overkill for a gun like this?

Well I'm a strong proponent of quality optics, so if you've got plenty of disposable income I'd say go for it. Or better yet if you've already got one laying around.

One thing with the GSG-16 is it's more accurate than you would think at first glance. It's not a suppressor on the end, after all, that's 100% barrel. So it does very well on the bench even if the long mag and short stature make it a bit funny looking.

All that being said, Bushnell TRS-25 is what I'm running and I've never felt a need for a more expensive optic.

Alright my SD forend arrived and installed, thanks Wal-Mart!! Couple of product feedback items for you:

1. The screw holes do not fit flush. It doesn't protrude much and there is minimal intrusive feel - but I think a recessed screw hole would be improved aesthetics.

2. I only used one out of two screws - and I would recommend your next version to only have one screw hole. It's enough to secure the forend, and as you mentioned it's already a very snug fit. I hairline cracked the other one with the factory screw without much force applied, it seems the holes should be a slightly wider gauge.

3. Super stretch goal: after sliding the forend on, you kinda have to play with it a bit to align the screw points. I'm not sure if there is some way you can incorporate a guide/stop or something to eliminate this alignment step.

Otherwise, very awesome/fine print and happy customer! Range test with drum mag coming this weekend!!

I put a Vortex Crossfire on and it’s great!

So I did about 10 of these up in various configurations and tested them, one thing for sure is you can't rely on friction fit alone. You aren't the first to comment about that, I've had requests for versions without the screws.... Unfortunately without the screws, after a range trip or two, the hand guard will slide right off the front of the gun with minimal effort. If this was airsoft I wouldn't worry but I wouldn't want a loaded .22LR slipping out of someone's hand, and without the screws it wouldn't be something I would be willing to put my name on.

As far as the single screw hole, I've had comments from people that the self-tapping screws from the rails have come stripped from the factory. They got them out but couldn't put them back in. So at least with both screw holes people have the choice whether to put in one in either hole, or use both.

As far as the screws sticking out, I had to walk a fine line between leaving enough plastic for the screw to actually grab while also not making the hand guard so thick it will look stupid or cost twice as much. Also, widening the hole could lead to some slop in the hand guard so yeah, it would improve the ease of lining it all up but it didn't seem worth the risk of a loose hand guard. That's why they are sized the way they are. I spent an unfortunate amount of time on those screw holes, including bigger counter-sinking and also no counter-sinking at all and this is definitely the version that works the best. It may not look perfect when zoomed in like a spy satellite, but from 24" away you can't even see the screw...

If that crack becomes an issue shoot me a PM. Thanks for the feedback and excellent pics!

Ahhh makes sense! Never 3D printed anything in my life, totally appreciate the design considerations you went through. Will monitor that crack and report back on effects of heat after a 110 round mag dump!

Cheers

I know you'll be okay with the heat because I cleaned out IRG of mags so I could try to melt it lol

Although I didn't have a bunch of drums available to me, you may hit some issues with heat if you had 4 or 5 drums, I did mag dump 6x 24 round mags and found no problems. So you'll be fine with 1 drum.

If anyone with multiple drums does manage to melt one, posts photos and tells us how many it took, I will print them another one. Shipping on them.

Its from my airsoft. It was a tokyo marui blow back. Dropped in with about 2 hours of dremel.

I had to dremel away the proof mark block on the trigger housing, and there was a rib in the mp5 lower that i had todremel flat as well. After that, i had to dremel a bitnof my norinco fixed stock so that it fits.

I love this thread. Mine should be here soon. It has been a little difficult to find the drum mags. I've messaged several retailers. One said not many came in and they don't expect them for a while.

Anyway, reading my emails this morning. Cabela's has some good sale and free shipping, no min order, use code THANKSGIVING. They also have the drum mags on their site listed as in stock on line. I bought one. we'll see how long it takes to show up.

Installed the adjustable trigger screw tonight. For me, i didnt like it, it creates more pre travel and has a weird almost 2 stage but not a 2 stage trigger pull.

Removed the screw, polished the trigger plate, sear and hammer. Now its a way better 4 lb trigger. Now regretting waiting for the BLS gun thinking the trigger pack is completely different. When i saw the 2 trigger pack side by side, i felt betrayed. The so called adjustable trigger is a 3/32nd hole with a 5-40 set screw.......

Got mine last week. First thing to go was the magazine safety. Now the mags insert and come out a lot easier. Go figure eh? Mine is missing the adjustment trigger screw as well. Meh. I did some polishing. Feels decent.

So it seems like I'm finally catching up. By Tuesday everyone who wanted the MP5SD-style hand guard will have a tracking number in their hands.

This is a friendly warning that if you are watching this thread and are on the fence, after Tuesday I will be devoting my printer time to some prototyping. So get your orders in before Tuesday if you want to receive it in a timely manner. It could be a few weeks before I start printing these again.

After Tuesday I'm going to pursue a butt stock rail cover for those that want to conceal the back rail without swapping to an airsoft stock, that seems to be a popular request, as well as the more traditional MP5 hand guard. If there are any other suggestions let me know.

How’d you get rid of the mag safety?

First of all, do you consider yourself a proper "Backyard Bubba Gunsmith" as so many of us do? Haha. It can be a little complicated for some. There are a lot of non captive springs. The trigger group has....7 springs if I'm counting correctly. Just removing the the bolt carrier group exposes a non captive spring in the upper receiver, you can see through the ejection port. Be careful.

Of course this will void your warranty.

Anyway:
-take off the butt stock
-remove the lower receiver
-remove the safety. Little philips screw on the on selector
-open up the pistol grip and remove the bolt
-the trigger group will come out. CAUTION - Little brass bushings and springs are exposed to fall into the dark corners of the room
-it is possible to remove the philips screws that hold the trigger assembly together, pry the two haves apart just enough to get the mag safety bar out. But more than likely, the main spring will try to launch itself. Be careful.
-last step, put it all back together and function test

I did fully disassemble my trigger group. I polished the sear and a few other places. The cast metal of the small parts do feel pretty gritty.

Do not try this unless you are confident. Small springs that love to have secret parties in the dark with the dust bunnies can be hard to find. Here is the mag safety and its spring:
