I was wondering - the 'clay' they make sporting clays out of is the same kind of clay you use in school to make bowls and vases and small statues, right?

I was in art class and I realised that if the clay's not cured in a kiln apparently it's very brittle and easy to shatter.

I'm wondering if I could make my own clays. I could use a pie plate and some wood to make a sort of 'mold' for the clay, then I could pour the clay in, wait for it to get a little stiff, then take it out andd leave it on the windowsill to dry, then take it out to the range and shoot it.

Would that work? Has anyone tried that before? How much are sporting clays at the store, anyways?

Thanks,

- Dave.

Oh Jesus Christ Dave, get out of you mom's basement and find yourself a piece of ass to call your own. Anyone with that much free time needs a second hobby.

Nope. Clay targets are made from limestone, coal tar pitch and paint.

Nope, not the same stuff.

You can buy them for less than $.10/bird, so even if it was the same stuff, I couldn't see it being cost effective.

...that's funny!

Bad enough spending several dollars worth of time and material to produce (or at least try to) what you can buy already pre-made for a few cents in a store, but when it's something that you know you're just going to blow to bits if you're successful, well... I dunno... there seems to be a certain 'inefficiency' in the effort...

But hey, there's probably some therapeutic value to kneading clay, so you would at least have that goin' for ya'...

...that, and the makings for a segment on 'Red Green'.

;)

So you drive all the way out to a trap club and maybe they'll sell them to you for $13.00, golly have you really saved anything? Seen the price of fuel lately? FS

Not worth my time running around to save 2 dollars on a box of 135. Just seems like everyone was in shock that I was paying 15 bucks for a box of 135. The two ranges I belong to do not sell clays. The one club a coworker belongs to does sell them as it is part of the membership but the membership is 350 bucks for the year vs the $70 I pay now.

$ 13 a box retail here .... and $ 10 at the Club for an occassional box or two.
At some Clubs , "pick-ups" off the ground are no charge if you want to pick up a couple of boxes during non-shooting hours.

Even at $ 15 a box, its still only 11 cents a target. Way less than smokes & beer .... or gas for that matter. :D

If he wants to make his own targets ... rock on !

For one or two at a time, $15 probably isn't too bad then. I usually deal in quantities closer to 1000 cases at a shot, and $15/box is about 50% more than market price (alas my concern).

Enjoy.

A 1000 cases would last me awhile :D At that amount you could go directly to the manuafacturer and get a good deal couldnt you?
