Making the T97 more Reliable (Update #118)

LAR15 works fine now.

Don't you have to reach over to the right side at the back to drop the mag anyways? FYI, the button is at the right rear corner, pressing it with your left index basically means grabbing the mag as well.

Correct, thats where it is , yet I am pretty sure I am not the only one that wishes it had a left side thumb release. Either way, good post. Thanks.

Harbl,
Apply moderate pressure on the forward (away from you) stroke.
No pressure on the return stroke.
The tiny shavings should be collecting on the far side of the filed area.
Use the whole length of the file, not just the middle two inches.
Slow, controlled strokes. You should NOT go at it like a teenager "rubbing one out".

This method is correct. Pressure on the rearward stroke will dull the file. The exception to this rule is when filing non-ferous (aluminum, brass, plastic, etc) back pressure helps remove chips from the teeth and prevents the file from getting clogged.

Any more fun stuff to enhance the T97's function?

Honestly run it well lubed and shoot the damn thing, most feeding issues have to do with break in. My t97 used to ftf every mag and the high the round count got the less it did it now it NEVER happens and no i didnt bastardize my gun with a file

I had mine out for the first time this week.
I would welcome your input.

First, I found it difficult to load the 5th round in the included E-lander magazine. Any solutions? Shall I bend the feed lips out a little?

I ran 80 rounds through it and had about 6 feed jams. I was using Norinco white box and yellow box ammo and some Sellier and Bellot green box. Each typed produced feeding problems with rounds being shoved back into the cartridge and damage as seen below:

It would appear that mine would benefit from some filing of the feed ramp. I can see that wears marks are setting up in the area previously mentioned. Also, I can see some wear around opening from the 9 o'clock to 6 o'clock position.

It was fun to shoot. I just have to figure out the point of aim with these open sights. Maybe a little paint or something on the front post. No consistent groups on paper. But I was able to ring the 100 yard, 8 inch gong regularly standing freehand.

I got the same issues with mine. I now have a $1000 paper weight because of top notch north sylva customer service.

Bevelling the feed ramp so that the feeding cartridge directs towards the hole also helps the feeding.

This T97 now feeds from PMAG 100% reliably at any angle(Pushing the mag up, down, sideways etc etc)

Also feeds perfectly with LAR-15 10 Rounders.

Here's what it looks like with a Pmag inserted

it looks like you beveled the chamber a little too. ive also done your ramp mod and it feeds 99.9% reliably now, but every once in a while ill get a bullet that hits just outside the chamber edge while feeding and get stuck, i was thinking about beveling it a bit but wasnt sure if it would be dangerous to do so

Not sure if they corrected some issues in the newer models but mine has been flawless in 400 rounds using Lar, Pmag and Steel AA Beowulf mags. I have a 14###x serial number. Fun rifle.

i used a dremel with the largest diameter grinding stone that would fit without hitting the walls, and went in through the bottom of the magwell with it. t_102's instructions were pretty clear i thought.

I apparently received a t97 with the ftf issues from new ( pushed in bullets , sideways rounds rammed into breech ), not with the factory mag but with grey and also the black lar-15 mags. I wanted the 10 round capacity so it was huge issue and a deal breaker if I could not use the lar-15 mags. I read every article I could find on the net re: magazine mods, feed ramp mods, ramp polishing..... I stated with the easiest step first by highly polishing my feed ramp and no luck whatsoever. I then looked at the magazines and after close examination it just seemed better to mod my rifle so that it would feed properly with all magazines. I started by filing the notches where the tip of the bullet would impact the ramp but found only a mild improvement and I still found myself frustrated at the range with unpredictable jambs and gun powder everywhere in the action. I finally realized that t_102's method was going to wok the best ( attempted partial filing of the feed ramp and it looked good but did not work , still had ftf issues) and I went the entire way filing tons of meat of the ramp into a nice clean U shape. Now my T97 will eat any brand of ammo that I feed it and feeds the grey and black lar-15 mags flawlessly. I am not happy that I had these initial problems but now that its working perfectly I really like this little rifle. Mine came with the FTU installed new from the store so I never had a chance to shoot it without a scope. I have a 1.25-4 Bushnell elite scope with the illuminated reticle on it and have dialled in a 2 inch group average from 100 yards, not great but good enough for a fun gun and that s hat I wanted it for fun, fun , fun. It was not the worst thing in the world having to figure out the ftf issue since I think I ending up adding something to basically every rifle I own, ( usually a new or modified trigger group, barrel brace, glass bedding, firing pin spring, sometimes a stock, or even a heavy barrel). I just wanted to share my experience since I was hesitant to actually file that much material ( yes its quite a bit ) out of the feed ramp on a new rifle. It was really worth it and even though its not an expensive gun its one of my favourites now, a huge fun factor and reasonable groups. It also looks like the aftermarket support is going to produce some really nice additions to this rifle. Thanks again to t_102 for taking the chance on his rifle to figure this out, the 5 shot pinned factory mag would have made me just stick with my mini 30.
