I bought the Hornady OAL gauge along with different cartridges. Everything worked well on my rifles until I went to measure my 3006 Benelli R1 .... Oops. A semi doesn't have a bolt. Now what? ... Well I could have ordered their curved one for semi's but .....
Canadian Tire has a sale on tap and die sets $29.00. Hmmm .... I wonder if could use a fired cartridge and make my own. Yes I know others have mentioned BUT could I do it?
Well it's much easier and cheaper then I thought. I tapped the cartridge, made certain the neck tension was enough to hold the bullet lightly and used a nylon screw. This was much easier then I thought, a lot cheaper and it seems my measurements are more accurate/ consistent. This was my first time using a tap set - it's very easy!
My only question - why did I wait so long to try this?
